Cherries sign 'keeper Nyland

AFC Bournemouth have completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

The Norway international, who was a free agent, has penned a one-year contract at Vitality Stadium after impressing head coach Scott Parker while training with the club for a short period.

Nyland has played in the top flights in Norway, Germany and England, making more than 240 appearances in all competitions as well as being capped 28 times by his country.

The 30-year-old featured in the Premier League for Aston Villa in 2019/20 having helped the Midlands club win the Championship play-offs the previous season.

He played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde and was named in the European Under-21 Championship team of the tournament in 2013 after helping Norway reach the semi-finals.

Nyland, who spent the second half of last season with Norwich, will add valuable experience to a goalkeeping department which includes Mark Travers, 22, and 21-year-old Will Dennis.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said: “We are delighted to have secured Orjan’s signature and are very much looking forward to working with him.

“I know Scott and his team have been very impressed with him in training and he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to what is a fairly youthful and talented goalkeeping department.

“Orjan has played domestically at the top level in three different countries and has also been capped by Norway. I am sure he will prove to be an excellent addition to the squad.”

Head coach Parker added: "We’re pleased to bring Orjan to the club, he brings a wealth of experience both in the Championship and internationally, and we’re looking forward to having him as part of the squad.

“He’ll add good competition to Mark Travers and Will Dennis, it’s been an area we’ve needed to look at and I’m excited about working with him.”

Nyland is expected to be included in the Cherries squad for Wednesday’s clash with Championship rivals Birmingham City at St Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium.
