AFC Bournemouth have completed the signing of midfielder Joe Rothwell on a four-year deal.

Following the expiry of his contract with Blackburn Rovers, the 27-year-old will make the move to Vitality Stadium on a free transfer.

Having graduated through Manchester United’s academy, Oxford United were Rothwell’s next permanent club before arriving at Ewood Park in the summer of 2018.

While with Rovers, the midfielder made 160 appearances for the Lancashire outfit, enjoying his best season during the 2021/22 campaign.

In 41 Championship games over the Cherries’ promotion-winning term, he was a key figure for Blackburn, accumulating ten assists in an impressive campaign.

Rothwell’s arrival is Scott Parker’s second signing ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season following Ryan Fredericks’ incoming earlier this week.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake told afcb.co.uk: “Joe has been on our radar for a while now and we’re delighted to bring him to the club.

“Unsurprisingly, we had huge competition to sign Joe, so we’re really pleased that he has chosen AFC Bournemouth as the next step in his career.

“Joe has proven himself as an outstanding midfielder in the Championship over the past few seasons and we believe he can continue his development under head coach Scott Parker and his coaching team.

“He has superb attributes to complement our other midfield players and we’re happy to bring another exciting signing ahead of our upcoming Premier League campaign.”
