Cherries end long wait for Derby victory

Goals from Dominic Solanke and Jamal Lowe earned AFC Bournemouth a 2-0 win over Derby County – the Cherries’ first victory over the Rams since 1985.

Leading marksman Solanke bagged his 22nd goal of the season in added time at the end of the first half, the strike owing much to Jaidon Anthony.

And in-form frontman Lowe came off the bench to grab his fourth goal in his past five games in the last minute.

The Cherries last triumphed against the Rams in January 1985 when Robbie Savage, Ian Thompson and a Kenny Burns own goal saw them run out 3-2 victors at the Baseball Ground.

This win for Scott Parker’s team some 37 years on saw them regain second place in the Championship, the Cherries leapfrogging Huddersfield and going two points clear of the Terriers.

Leif Davis was handed his first Championship start since January as head coach Scott Parker made three changes following the 1-1 draw with Peterborough on Tuesday.

Defender Davis, who is on loan to the Cherries from Leeds United, was drafted into a back four alongside Jack Stacey, Nat Phillips and captain Lloyd Kelly.

Jaidon Anthony, who netted in the Cherries’ 3-2 defeat at Pride Park Stadium in November, was also restored to the starting line-up, as was Jefferson Lerma following his four-match ban.

Rams defender Lee Buchanan required a lengthy spell of treatment following a clash of heads with Ryan Christie in the early stages and was given the all-clear to continue.

Malcolm Ebiowei fashioned the first shooting opportunity after turning in off the right flank, his effort saved comfortably by Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers.

Christie’s free kick from 20 yards was charged down by the Derby wall before a promising move involving the Scotsman’s came to nothing with Derby clearing the danger.

Former Cherries goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was forced to beat away a stinging drive from Anthony after Todd Cantwell had teed him up following a driving run.

Referee Andrew Madley waved away Derby’s claims for a penalty after Ravel Morrison had gone to ground under a challenge from Davis.

The Leeds loan player appeared to hurt his groin while making the tackle and was replaced by Jordan Zemura in the 29th minute.

Christie took aim following a surging run across the top of the 18-yard box, his effort flying over the crossbar.

Allsop needed attention after he had come off worse during a collision with Lerma as the Colombia international attempted to meet Christie’s far post header.

As the Cherries ramped up the pressure, Dominic Solanke just failed to make contact with Lerma’s low, driven cross before Eiran Cashin cleared Cantwell’s dangerous centre.

Solanke opened the scoring in added time at the end of the first half, his 22nd goal of the season owing much to the persistence of Anthony.

The winger collected a pass from Zemura before embarking on a mesmerising run which saw him roll the ball between the legs of both Krystian Bielik and Curtis Davies.

And after Cashin had attempted to slide in on Anthony, the ball popped up off the Derby defender with Solanke on hand to prod it into the back of the net.

Solanke was denied a second goal when Allsop clawed away his glancing header from a Christie corner at the start of the second half.

Travers made a smart save at his near post to keep out Buchanan’s thunderous strike before Zemura made a crucial bloke to deflect a shot from Davies following the resultant corner.

Cantwell fired straight at Allsop after exchanging passes with Christie before Travers made a top-drawer save to block Morrison’s angled drive.

Christie’s low drive was snaffled by Allsop before the Scotsman received a booking after referee Madley deemed he had taken a dive following a coming-together with Max Bird.

Substitute Lowe completed the scoring when he seized on the loose ball and finished with accuracy after Allsop had only been able to parry Solanke’s venomous effort.

It was in-form Lowe’s fourth goal in five games and his sixth of the season, his effort sealing a well-deserved win for Parker’s team.
