Phil Foden’s opportunist second-half goal earned holders Manchester City a narrow 2-1 win over AFC Bournemouth in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Foden set up a trip to Burnley as Pep Guardiola’s side saw off a spirited Cherries team in their pursuit of lifting the trophy for a fourth year in succession.
Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers made important saves from Ferran Torres and Riyad Mahrez to prevent City taking the lead in the opening 16 minutes.
But Travers was powerless to stop teenager Liam Delap opening the scoring with a venomous strike on debut after 18 minutes.
However, Sam Surridge restored parity just four minutes later following excellent work from Cherries playmaker David Brooks.
A major concern for the visitors was losing Lloyd Kelly to injury midway through the first half, the defender replaced by Jordan Zemura.
But after Guardiola had thrown on big guns Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling, Foden settled the issue in favour of the hosts 14 minutes from time.
Diego Rico was drafted in for his first start of the season as boss Jason Tindall made four changes following the penalty shootout victory over Crystal Palace in the second round.
Rico, whose first taste of action having recovered from a thigh injury was as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, replaced Zemura.
Goalkeeper Travers came in for Asmir Begovic, Adam Smith replaced Jack Stacey and Dan Gosling, who was handed the captain’s armband, stepped in for the departed Harry Arter.
Begovic, Stacey and Zemura were all named among the Cherries substitutes along with Steve Cook, Jefferson Lerma, Gavin Kilkenny and Jaidon Anthony.
Although Manchester City were without the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Sergio Aguero, they still named a strong starting line-up.
Skippered by Kyle Walker, summer signing Torres and goalkeeper Zack Steffen both started, as did Rodrigo, Mahrez, Foden and Eric Garcia.
Several graduates and members of the club’s much-vaunted academy were involved, including Delap, son of Rory Delap, and Tommy Doyle, grandson of City legend Mike Doyle.
Former Cherries favourite Nathan Ake, who moved to the Etihad last month, was named among the City substitutes, with Sterling and De Bruyne also on the bench.
Two early corners from Doyle were dealt with by the Cherries defence with Foden scuffing a shot well wide following the second flag-kick.
Surridge showed great strength and pace to chase down a through ball from Rico, only for Taylor Harwood-Bellis to eventually wrest the ball from the striker.
Travers spread himself well to pull off a smart save from Torres after the Spanish striker had latched on to Foden’s ball over the top in the 11th minute.
Jack Simpson read another Foden pass which had been intended for Delap, the defender safely finding Travers with a backpass.
Travers was again forced to save at his near post after Mahrez had wriggled free, the Irish stopper turning the shot past the post.
Rodrigo headed wide when well placed before Delap drew first blood with a finely-taken goal after 18 minutes.
The teenage striker snuck in behind Simpson to meet Foden’s pass and drilled an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top corner.
However, City’s lead was short-lived as the Cherries levelled through Surridge following great work from playmaker Brooks.
The former City youngster picked up the ball in his own half before embarking on an enterprising run into enemy territory.
And after slipping the ball to Gosling, he found Surridge who fired into the bottom corner from just inside the 18-yard box having given his marker the slip with a neat turn.
The Cherries were rocked when Lloyd Kelly was forced off due to injury midway through the first half with Jordan Zemura replacing him in the 27th minute.
Brooks was unable to find Surridge with a cross after the Cherries had again threatened, the young frontmen both catching the eye in the opening period.
City were also forced into a change in the first half, defender Adrian Bernabe replaced by Benjamin Mendy after 36 minutes.
Delap failed to connect with Walker’s cross at the far post before Mendy beat Surridge to another searching pass from the impressive Brooks.
Rico did well to block Walker’s dangerous cross before Rodrigo’s thunderous 20-yarder flashed past the upright on the stroke of half-time.
Simpson raced in ahead of Delap to cut out Mendy’s low centre at the start of the season half before Mahrez’s cross-shot just eluded the far post.
Ofoborh and Simpson both made timely blocks to prevent long-range shots from Rodrigo and Mahrez from reaching Travers.
Brooks created two openings for Surridge in quick succession, the first seeing the striker closed down as he prepared to pull the trigger.
And after another delightful pass from Brooks had exposed the City defence, Steffen had to hare off his line to slide tackle Surridge outside his box.
A penalty appeal fell on deaf ears after Gosling had gone to ground in the 56th minute with referee Jonathan Moss totally unmoved.
Ofoborh and Gosling stood firm to clear corners from Mahrez before De Bruyne came on for Rodrigo after 61 minutes.
Foden’s speculative effort from 25 yards failed to trouble Travers as it sailed high over the crossbar before Rico made way for Steve Cook in the 64th minute.
Garcia’s challenge on Brooks stopped the Cherries forward creating an opening before Travers was forced to beat away Torres’s shot from an acute angle.
Foden restored the hosts’ lead when he seized on the loose ball after Mahrez’s shot from the edge of the box had come back off the base of the post.
And after reacting quickly, Foden’s effort flew into the back of the net despite the best efforts of Travers who got a hand to his shot.
Travers required a lengthy spell of treatment having been clattered by Delap, the young striker receiving a yellow card for his challenge.
Surridge could only glance a header wide from a Lewis Cook free-kick in the closing stages before referee Moss brought the tie to a close after three minutes of added time.
