Cherries fan David Brooks had an 80th birthday to remember as his namesake scored twice to ease Scott Parker’s team into the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The octogenarian, who was given a half-time name-check by stadium announcer Mike Botto, looked on from his seat in the North Stand as Brooks netted a finely-taken opener in the first half.
It was added to by second-half efforts from Dominic Solanke and Phil Billing before Christian Saydee came off the bench to mark his professional debut with a goal.
And Saydee then teed up Brooks for his second and the Cherries’ fifth as Parker marked his first competitive game at the helm with an outstanding all-round team performance.
Jaidon Anthony was handed his full debut while new signing Emiliano Marcondes also started, as did defender Zeno Ibsen Rossi who spent last season on loan to Kilmarnock.
MK Dons handed debuts to Franco Ravizzoli, Tennai Watson, Scott Twine, Aden Baldwin and Mo Eisa, their record signing from Peterborough United.
Lloyd Kelly, who led out the Cherries, headed clear from Matt O’Riley’s free-kick before Mark Travers raced off his line to punch away Aden Baldwin’s through ball in the early stages.
Brooks’s delicate cross prompted a frantic goalmouth scramble which saw Dominic Solanke’s shot blocked by Daniel Harvie.
And Brooks was then foiled by Dons goalkeeper Ravizzoli, the Wales international’s shot saved low down following good work by Jack Stacey.
Eisa took a heavy touch and failed to control a David Kasumu pass when well placed before Ravizzoli did well to punch clear Marcondes’s 19th-minute corner under immense pressure from Kelly.
The teams traded chances inside 60 seconds with Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers smothering Twine’s snapshot from the edge of the box.
And as play quickly switched to the opposite end, Brooks lifted his effort over the crossbar with the goal gaping after Anthony and Phil Billing had combined to fashion the opening.
Ibsen Rossi climbed highest to meet a Marcondes corner, the defender’s header finding the hands of Ravizzoli before another Brooks shot was comfortably saved.
Brooks atoned for his earlier miss when he fired the Cherries ahead with a quite majestic goal in the 35th minute.
He stole in at the far post and applied a deft right-foot, first-time finish to Gavin Kilkenny’s exquisite assist, the Dubliner picking out his team-mate with a sumptuous crossfield pass.
Some of the gloss was taken off a fine goal when Stacey was forced off due to an injury, the defender replaced by Jordan Zemura five minutes before half-time.
Travers got down well at his near post to push Watson’s fierce cross away for a corner before Brooks found Ravizzoli’s gloves after being put through by Solanke in first-half stoppage time.
The Cherries doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half, Solanke putting the finishing touches to another excellent team move.
Kilkenny was again the architect, the midfielder’s sweeping pass picking out Brooks on the right flank.
And after Brooks had slipped the ball to an underlapping Adam Smith, his cross to the near post found Solanke who fired home after a clever turn had outfoxed his marker.
Anthony weaved his way into a shooting position, only for his resultant effort to hit Solanke, before Travers pushed a free-kick from Twine away for a corner.
As the Cherries continued to create chances, Solanke’s shot on the turn was deflected for a corner, while as Dons’ frustrations grew, Kasumu and Harvie were booked in quick succession.
Billing’s 20-yard free-kick looked destined for the top corner before Ravizzoli tipped it away and Travers was equal to Harry Darling’s thunderous drive, the Cherries goalkeeper diving full length to keep out the defender’s strike.
Anthony, teed up by Billing, could only lift the ball into Ravizzoli’s hands before the Dons goalkeeper threw himself to his right to keep out Kilkenny’s rasping effort.
Billing seized on a misunderstanding between Ravizzoli and O’Hora to add a third on 72 minutes, the midfielder coolly finding the corner of the net after the pair had contrived to lose the ball on the edge of their box.
Saydee, on as a 76th-minute replacement for Solanke, made a remarkable impact, scoring and supplying an assist on his professional debut.
The young striker bundled home the ball from close range after fellow substitute Junior Stanislas had crossed in the 80th minute.
And Saydee then turned provider for Brooks to add his second and the Cherries’ fifth, another assured finish giving Ravizzoli no chance two minutes later.
