First-half goals guided AFC Bournemouth to a fifth straight Championship victory as the side's playoff push was boosted further by a 2-1 win away at Huddersfield Town.

The Cherries turned a positive start into a lead when their two in-form men combined; Philip Billing heading home a rebound after an Arnaut Danjuma probe ended with a repelled shot.

Dominic Solanke gave his side breathing room at the break with a stunning swerving strike from just outside the box, the Cherries' first-half dominance reflected on the scoreboard at half time.

Despite the away dominance, the Terriers found a route back into the contest with 15 minutes remaining when Jonathan Hogg header in from a set piece.

Solanke and substitute Sam Surridge came close to a nerve-settling third, but the time slowly ebbed to its conclusion with some strong defensive work confirming the three precious points.

Following the weekend win over Coventry City, there was just a single change to the starting 11 in West Yorkshire. Ben Pearson came in for Jack Wilshere, the former Arsenal man dropping to the bench, where he was joined by the returning Junior Stanislas.

Kicking-off in the early-evening spring sunshine, inside 45 seconds the Cherries had a chance to add another very early goal to the side's seasonal CV - Lloyd Kelly spiking in a shot towards the near post which was saved by 'keeper Ryan Schofield.

The away side were applying the pressure but were almost caught on the break as the Terriers worked the ball forwards at pace, an attack ending with a right-footed shot from Aaron Rowe, Asmir Begovic pushing the ball wide for a corner.

The Cherries soon had the lead, and it was the former Huddersfield man Billing who came back to haunt his old side.

The Dane started the move on halfway, playing wide to Arnaut Danjuma who speared forwards and got his shot away. Saved by the legs of the 'keeper the ball looped up for Billing who confidently headed it home from ten yards.

Billing was soon in the thick of the action again, his 22-yard shot deflected wide for a corner, Danjuma's set piece next rebounding wide via Solanke.

The same clutch of players the busiest for both sides, Begovic making a strong one-handed save to keep out Rowe again, Hogg seeing a powered low shot blocked from the resulting corner.

Adam Smith surged to the byline and pulled back low for Danjuma, but with defenders converging on the Dutchman and making his task difficult he pulled his shot over the bar.

Bournemouth were in control of possession and proceedings with ten minutes remaining in the first half, chasing a second to cement their superiority.

Racing clear down the left, Solanke volleyed a bouncing ball just wide on his left foot, though within a minute a sublime finished from the same man doubled the advantage.

Pearson was industrious and passed into the striker, who turned before unleashing an unstoppable bending strike into the top corner, the Cherries returning to the dressing rooms moments later in a commanding position.

Huddersfield gave the visitors a scare within three minutes of the restart, Lewis O'Brien piling in a ferocious effort that bounced clear off the underside of Begovic's crossbar.

A third was threatened at the other end when Jefferson Lerma's pass to Solanke opened room to attack, but the striker's pass for Brooks was overhit as the Terriers escaped further punishment.

A Danjuma corner dropped first to Cameron Carter-Vickers and then Steve Cook, though neither of the defensive partnership could get a clean shot away.

Lloyd Kelly's forward run got him to the byline, his low ball across worked centrally and falling to Solanke who got a shot away but saw it blocked.

The visitors remaining in the ascendancy, Danjuma's dangerous set piece from wide left was flicked narrowly wide by the head of Lerma.

Stanislas made his return when he replaced Danjuma in the 72nd minute, but within three minutes Huddersfield halved the away advantage against the run of play.

Long-term Terriers midfielder Hogg was the scorer as his near-post run attacked a delivery from a corner and the glanced finish was precise, across the 'keeper and inside the far upright.

The fixture unexpectedly having an edge of anxiety about it, substitute Jack Stacey's pull back couldn't be turned home by Solanke to ease the building pressure.

A defensive block from Cook was needed as the match moved into the final five minutes, the fate of the points still uncertain and nerves setting in as the Cherries looked to see their lead home to the final whistle.

Surridge was brought on and with his first touch almost finished the contest, Scholfield leaping to impressively tip the shot over the bar.

The board was raised with five additional minutes signaled on it, Huddersfield claiming for a penalty after the ball struck Carter-Vickers blocking a shot but the referee waved away the appeals.

Begovic claimed, momentarily dropped and then regathered a cross and the sting finally taken out of Terriers' tails the match came to its end, with a five-point cushion inside the top six secured along with a fifth straight win and a seasonal double over Huddersfield.
