Artur Boruc - I still have some spark left in me

Written by Iain Pearce

Artur Boruc is looking to continue his strong form into the new season after marking his contract extension with a match-winning clean sheet at Sunderland.

The Stadium of Light shutout included fine saves from Fabio Borini and George Honeyman in a second half which climaxed with Joshua King’s late winner.

As he approaches two decades in the game, the former Poland international retains his love for football, which will continue to be seen at Vitality Stadium next season with the stopper’s extended deal.

“I get used to the saves and I’m happy with the clean sheet,” Boruc told afcb.co.uk. “I’m happy that I could help the team. It’s nearly 20 years now that I’m doing this so it’s something you don’t lose with the years.

“It feels fantastic to have the new contract, I don’t know how it’s going to be next year but I’m really pleased because the gaffer’s trusted me and I’ll continue to stay here for another year.

“Now I’ve got to do everything to be the best that I can be.”

At 37 years of age Boruc continues to impress in the Premier League, and he explained the importance of Saturday’s win on Wearside.

“It was huge,” he said. “It was a game we couldn’t lose and a draw would have been OK but with two extra points and a clean sheet, we’re very happy with that and we’re looking forward to the next games.

“I still have some spark in me and I still have ambition, as you saw today.”
