Premier League Cup clash fogged off

AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League Cup clash against Southampton on Wednesday was abandoned due to fog.

The contest at AFC Totton’s Snows Stadium was brought to a premature end by referee Matthew Russell early in the second half.

Fog had blanketed the pitch during the half-time interval, obscuring the view of players, officials, management and spectators among a crowd of 290.

Assistant referees Colin Hubbard and Grzegorz Kornasiewicz could not see across the pitch, making offside decisions impossible.

Referee Russell stopped the game ten minutes into the second half and spoke to rival managers Shaun Cooper and Dave Horsman about the worsening conditions.

And although the official decided to see whether the situation would improve during a five-minute break, he called proceedings to a halt as it was no better.

Although Southampton were leading thanks to Luke Pearce’s tenth-minute goal, the tie is expected to be replayed.

Cherries and the Saints have both taken one point from their first two games in Group A with West Brom leading the table with nine points from three games and Arsenal second having taken two points from three matches.
