Alan Connell’s AFC Bournemouth development squad wrote a new chapter in the club’s Premier League Cup record books after triumphing 1-0 against Norwich City on Saturday.

Victory at Wimborne Town’s New Cuthbury saw the Cherries end their qualifying campaign as group winners with an unbeaten record for the first time in the competition.

Balraj Landa netted the only goal against the Canaries as Connell’s team finished top of Group C, setting up a home clash with Group D runners-up Leeds United later this month.

The Cherries are just one of four teams to have remained unbeaten in the group stage and their points haul of 16 from six games is the joint highest with Group D winners Chelsea.

They could be joined by Nottingham Forest, who have 13 points with a game to play, while Villa have completed their games programme on 14 points.

The Cherries finished as group runners-up in their first two seasons in the competition and were knocked out in the last 16 by Newcastle (2017/18) and Nottingham Forest (2018/19).

In 2019/20, the Cherries topped their group with 13 points and were due to host Wigan Athletic in the last 16 before the competition was curtailed due to the pandemic.
