Cooper bursting with pride after Baggies victory

Written by Zoe Rundle

Shaun Cooper has shared his delight after his development squad side put four past West Brom without reply on Thursday evening.

Taking place at Vitality Stadium, the result saw the Cherries pick up a valuable three points in Group A of the Premier League Cup, moving them back in contention to qualify for the knockout stages.

The win sees them sat third, a point and a place behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

However, victory over the Baggies is somewhat a statement as the visitors had previously picked up nine points from nine in their opening three fixtures.

Speaking with afcb.co.uk, a beaming Cooper gave his thoughts on a brilliant performance from his side.

“I’m really pleased, I thought we were in full control for pretty much all the game,” hw began.

“We had really professional habits throughout the game and I’m pleased with how the lads adapted to a 3-5-2 system that we don’t often play.

“The four goals were nice. The first two, one was a second-phase set piece and one was a second ball from a set piece so, for all our control, it was two set pieces that got us in front.

“It was great football for the third goal and the fourth was then a press on the counter. It was a really nice blend of goals and, when we were four up, I thought we could’ve gone harder for goals.

“Having said that, the lads chose sensibly to see the game out with possession. Our discipline on the ball in those moments was really pleasing.

“Overall, I’m delighted because West Brom have dominated this group so far. It’s a big win for us and it’s good for our goal difference so hopefully we can follow it up with a win against Southampton next week.”

Cooper was quick to praise the play up both ends of the pitch, with a clean sheet to go with the four superb goals scored at Vitality Stadium.

The former Cherries player began by discussing the scorers and the impact they continue to have.

“I’m really pleased that Christian [Saydee] got a goal and Euan [Pollock] got two because that’s what I need.

“I’m really delighted for Zeno [Ibsen Rossi] as well. We used him as a target from set pieces today and I thought Ben Greenwood’s delivery was excellent all night.

“As for the clean sheet, we had to recover against some of their counter-attacks and we did so really well.

“The lads take pride in the clean sheets, so I’m really happy for them.”

Elsewhere on the pitch, it was a big night for Ben Winterburn, the 17-year-old making his maiden appearance at Vitality Stadium and his first in the Premier League Cup.

Not only was the midfielder named in the starting line-up, he also got the assist for Pollock’s fourth goal with a delightful reverse pass into the striker.

“For so many reasons, I thought Ben Winterburn was outstanding tonight,” Cooper said.

“There was a lot of really top performances but, given the context of his age and the occasion, I thought he was brilliant.

“His positioning in possession was good, his understanding of the press was superb, his intensity and tenacity, everything that he did and his quality on the ball was all brilliant.

“I wasn’t surprised, but I was very impressed.”
