Community round up: Awards and summer events

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Head of Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss updates afcb.co.uk on the latest happenings in and around the local area.

It has been another busy fortnight for AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust. With the season now finished, our attention is turned to our end of season celebrations, activities and summer events.

End of Season Awards

This week we were delighted to attend the AFC Bournemouth Player Awards Evening, where we awarded Nathan Ake with the Community Player of the Season Award.

The defender is our Premier League Primary Stars player ambassador and has attended two Primary Stars PE lessons this season, where he helped to teach and inspire the school pupils.

Alongside this, he has been involved in a number of other events, specifically including the Show Racism the Red Card event, which was held at Vitality Stadium back in April.

We are delighted to have awarded Ake with this award and would like to thank him for his continued support across the season.

Play on the Pitch

This week we are delighted to be hosting our annual events on the main pitch at Vitality Stadium.

We kicked off this period with an event for our players from the Premier League Girls and Premier League Kicks programmes, as they spent some time playing small-sided fixtures during an evening on the pitch.

We have also enjoyed a PE lesson with the Year 5 pupils from St. James Academy and a Premier League Primary Stars tournament with 15 local schools involved.

There’s more to come too, as on Thursday we welcome the Year 4 pupils from Avonwood Primary to Vitality Stadium for a PE Lesson, and we also host a Year 5 girls tournament too.

This week, we will also host a number of disability football sessions on the pitch, including a SEND Schools tournament and PE lessons, a Walking Football session, all before the week comes to an end with the AFC Bournemouth Women’s game on the pitch.

The Cherries Women host Women’s Super League side Yeovil Town Ladies FC on Thursday evening in a friendly fixture which kicks off at 6.30pm.

It’s free to come and watch, and the gates open at 5pm for a showcase of the AFC Bournemouth Girls youth teams. We hope to see lots of you there supporting the Women!

Meg Vella wins Women’s Player of the Season

At Monday’s End of Season Awards, Meg Vella received the Player of the Season for the Women’s team.

She not only plays for AFC Bournemouth, but she is also a mother to a young daughter and has a full-time job in the Army. She has been a great asset to the Women’s team this season, and we were delighted to recognise this on Monday.

Introduction into Mental Health in Football CPD

Join us at Vitality Stadium on Wednesday 15th May, 7-9pm for our CPD event which will look specifically to raise awareness of mental health issues relevant to both adults and youths as part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2019. Email [email protected] to confirm your place.

Powerchair Team Promoted

AFC Bournemouth’s powerchair team have gained promotion to the Premiership after the final fixtures of the season.

After winning the first two games 10-0 and 4-0, the important fixture was to be played against Manchester United, which ended 1-1. A draw was enough to promote United as Champions, and ourselves as runners-up. We’re looking forward to next season now!
