Community continue Primary Stars work

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Over the past six weeks, Year 1 and 2 pupils from Kinson Primary School have been getting some extra numeracy lessons, thanks to the Community Sports Trust.

As part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme, just under 20 pupils have taken part in weekly after-school club sessions, which combine fun practical football activities and numeracy skills.

Throughout their after-school club sessions, the 5-7 year olds have practised their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, with a long-term goal of strengthening their number bonds.

Whilst also getting them active, and keeping learning fun, the after-school club lessons have been AFC Bournemouth themed, encouraging the children to practise their football skills.

The lessons have put emphasis on not just improving the young pupils’ learning abilities in maths, but also developing their teamwork skills and resilience.

Speaking about the after-school sessions, Head of Community Steve Cuss said, “Premier League Primary Stars continues to be a fantastic way to engage and help boys and girls learn in many different ways.

“The numeracy lessons have been well received at Kinson Primary School and are a good example of using the power of football, AFC Bournemouth and the Premier League to inspire learning in a fun environment.”

AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust’s Premier League Primary Stars programme is open to all schools in Bournemouth and Poole from September 2019. The Primary Stars coaches deliver PE lessons to pupils whilst offering teaching points and continued professional development to teachers and higher-level teaching assistants. The coaches are also able to provide PSHE lessons, and extra-curricular clubs.
