Tyler Cordner was credited with an assist as Scunthorpe United triumphed 2-1 against League Two rivals Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium.
Cordner, who made his 15th appearance for the Iron, lined up on the opposite side to Cherries team-mate Jake Scrimshaw.
And the big defender had a hand in the opening goal as Myles Hippolyte drew first blood for the visitors in the 27th minute.
Hippolyte netted from close range after Mason O’Malley’s free-kick had ricocheted off Cordner and fallen invitingly for him.
Earlier, Hippolyte had been foiled by a good save from Walsall goalkeeper Jack Rose, while Scrimshaw had headed narrowly over the crossbar following a Cameron Norman centre.
The Saddlers levelled on 55 minutes when Wes McDonald stole in at the far post to volley home another Norman cross.
But Walsall spurned the chance to take the lead six minutes later when Iron goalkeeper Mark Howard saved Josh Gordon’s penalty.
Alex Gilliead’s strike from 20 yards sealed the points for Scunthorpe in the 69th minute before Scrimshaw twice went close to levelling.
The striker’s close-range header was saved by Howard before Scrimshaw’s shot was blocked. He was replaced by Mat Sadler 16 minutes from time.
Illness forced Kyle Taylor to sit out Southend United’s 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient where Jobi McAnuff and Conor Wilkinson were on target for the hosts.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Sam Sherring maintained his impressive win ratio with Torquay United as the Gulls edged a seven-goal thriller against Weymouth on Monday.
Born in Dorchester and raised in Bridport, Sherring returned to Dorset to help the Gulls open an 11-point lead thanks to Connor Lemonheigh-Evans’s late winner at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
The defender did battle with his Cherries team-mate Christian Saydee who turned in an accomplished display on his full debut for the Terras.
Goals from Asa Hall and Josh Umerah inside the opening 25 minutes put Gary Johnson’s table-toppers in the driving seat against Brian Stock’s strugglers.
And although Cody Cooke halved the arrears in the 31st minute, Aaron Nemane restored the Gulls’ two-goal lead at the start of the second half.
But the Terras fought back and restored parity through Cameron Murray’s 50th-minute effort and a penalty from Josh McQuoid 12 minutes later.
Lemonheigh-Evans had the final say three minutes from time as Sherring made it 12 wins and two draws from his 15 league games for the Gulls.
Sherring made 37 league and cup appearances during a loan spell with Weymouth as the Terras were crowned Southern League champions in 2018/19.
