Solanke wins 16th cap for under-21s

AFC Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke came off the bench in England under-21s’ 1-1 draw with Poland in Bristol last night.

Solanke replaced goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin 18 minutes from the end of the friendly, which was staged at Ashton Gate.

The frontman earned his 16th cap for the under-21s as a dominant display saw them extend to 16 matches their unbeaten run.

Everton’s Calvert-Lewin gave the Young Lions an early lead when he got on the end of a low cross from Reiss Nelson.

But Poland equalised with a spectacular free-kick from around 30 yards from Sebastian Szymanski after 34 minutes

Solanke will be hoping for more game time when England host current European Under-21 champions Germany at a sold-out Vitality Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

England, beaten by Germany on penalties in the 2017 semi-final, face France, Romania and Croatia in group games at this year’s finals, which take place in Italy and San Marino in June.

AFC Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake was an unused substitute as Netherlands kicked-off their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a resounding 4-0 win over Belarus last night.

Memphis Depay netted twice, including a penalty, and provided assists for Liverpool pair Georginio Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk to score in Rotterdam.

Ake will be hoping to feature when Netherlands, who face England in the Nations League semi-finals in June, host Germany in their second qualifier in Amsterdam on Sunday.

AFC Bournemouth under-18 skipper Brennan Camp earned his second cap for Scotland under-19s in their 3-1 win over Turkey in a European Under-19 Championship qualifier in Portugal on Wednesday.

Camp, who scored on his international debut in a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in a friendly last month, replaced Jordan Houston in the 90th minute in Felgueiras.

The young Scots continue their qualifying campaign when they face Cyprus at Estadio do Rio Ave in Portugal tomorrow (3pm).

Meanwhile, Chris Mepham and David Brooks did not feature in Wales’s last-gasp 1-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Jordan Holmes, who is currently on loan to St Mirren, made his debut for Australia under-23s in their 1-1 draw with Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Holmes is with the Australia squad in Cambodia where they are playing AFC Under-23 Championship qualifiers against the host country, Chinese Taipei and South Korea.
