AFC Bournemouth is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Terry Gulliver, a popular member of 1970/71 promotion-winning squad.

A native of Salisbury, Terry represented North Dorset as a long jumper whilst a schoolboy and played football both for Shaftesbury Boys and Dorset Boys. His performances soon attracted the attention of several local clubs and he eventually joined Weymouth in June 1961.

Boscombe manager Freddie Cox brought the pacey, 5-ft 9-in tall full-back to Dean Court in August 1966 and the 21-year-old made his Third Division debut in a 1-1 draw against Oxford United.

Partnering the likes of Roy Gater, David Stocks and Jimmy White in the Cherries defence, he quickly became a firm favourite with supporters.

Rarely out of the side for the following four seasons other than through occasional injury, Terry’s polished performances displayed speed and strength in the tackle together with a keenness to join the attack and he became a key member of the Boscombe side.

He was part of the squad that drew with Liverpool in the FA Cup in January 1968, playing in front of 24,000 people at Dean Court as the Cherries forced a replay.

Terry also featured strongly in the team that finished fourth in the Third Division the following season and appeared in the victory over First Division Sheffield Wednesday in the 1969/70 League Cup.

He retained his place in the Cherries squad following John Bond’s restructure and was a valuable member of the promotion-winning side of 1970/71. In 2021, he reunited with former teammates Stocks and Kieron Baker to discuss that unforgettable campaign [LINK].

Having made a total of 163 League outings for Boscombe, Terry left for South Africa in June 1972, where he joined Capetown City and became an influential figure as they won the South African title.

He later joined rivals Hellenic and then whilst coaching in Cape Town, became sales manager of a pipe manufacturing company before returning to England to fill a similar position in 1986.

Terry remained a regular visitor to Vitality Stadium to watch the Cherries, becoming a member of the club’s Vice President’s Club.

AFC Bournemouth would like to extend their condolences to Terry’s family and friends.
