Mepham wins, Moriah-Welsh makes debut

Chris Mepham's Wales earned a crucial 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in their latest World Cup qualifier, one of three Cherries to represent their countries on Tuesday.

Daniel James scored the crucial winner with a header from a Gareth Bale cross to settle a high-tempered encounter in Cardiff, with both sides having a player red carded.

Mepham won his 16th international cap in helping to keep a clean sheet, playing the first 57 minutes at the Cardiff City Stadium as Wales bounced back from their 3-1 loss to group leaders Belgium in their first qualifier last week.

In neutral Dominican Republic there was a landmark evening for 19-year-old Nathan Moriah-Welsh, who made his international debut in Guyana's 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Bahamas.

The midfielder replaced Trayon Bobb in the 78th minute of the game, the result putting the Golden Jaguars back on track after they had lost 3-0 to Trinidad and Tobago earlier in this international break.

The win puts the side up to third in their CONCACAF qualifying group with three points, behind Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis on four and six points respectively, with only one team advancing from the group.

In Hungary, Shane Long started for Republic of Ireland in their international friendly with World Cup hosts Qatar.

The Cherries loanee had a good chance in the first half, playing 57 minutes of the 1-1 draw as he won his 88th cap - moving him up to joint tenth on the list of all-time most capped players for his nation.
