Mepham helps Wales to the brink

Chris Mepham was an integral part of Wales' brilliant 2-0 win over Turkey as they moved to within touching distance of qualification to the knockout stages at Euro 2020.

Far from home in Baku and in front of a voracious home-leaning crowd of pushing 20,000 fans, Wales put in a strong performance and took the lead near the culmination of an end-to-end first half when Aaron Ramsey converted from Gareth Bale's smart ball over the defence.

Bale missed a golden chance to effectively end the contest when he missed a penalty in the second half, leading to an intense rundown to full time with defensive pairing Mepham and Joe Rodon excellent in keeping their clean sheet intact.

With the seconds running out, Wales made sure as Bale set up right-back Connor Roberts from a corner to seal the game and spark wild Welsh celebrations in Azerbaijan.

Building on their opening-match point against Switzerland, Wales are now almost certain to claim a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

First, however, Robert Page's squad will travel to Rome to take on group leaders Italy on Sunday (5pm kick-off), the Italians sitting top of Group A after back-to-back wins.
