Jefferson Lerma's Colombia were beaten 3-0 at home by Uruguay as they suffered their first loss in World Cup qualification.

Midfleider Lerma started the match and played 90 minutes in his country's behind closed doors tie in Barranquilla, Los Cafeteros' third match as they look to book a place in Qatar for 2022.

Manchester United's Edinson Cavani opened the scoring inside five minutes, second-half strikes from Luis Suarez and Nahitan Nandez completing a disappointing outing for Colombia.

Lerma received a late yellow card at the Estadio Metropolitano - where Colombia were reduced to ten men when Yerry Mina was dismissed in added time.

Colombia have now won one, drawn one and lost one in their attempts to get to the next World Cup, leaving them a point outside the qualification spots in the CONMEBOL rankings.

Carlos Queiroz's side next travel to Ecuador for their fourth match in the cycle, taking place on Tuesday in Quito.
