Loan Watch: Travers' heroics in vain

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Mark Travers made a string of fine saves but could not help Swindon Town slipping to a 1-0 defeat against League One high-fliers Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Travers made his fifth appearance for the struggling Robins and was powerless to prevent Greg Docherty netting the only goal in the fifth minute.

However, he pulled off a stunning save to keep out Keane Lewis-Potter’s effort after the striker had gone through one-on-one eight minutes later.

And after the Tigers had had a penalty appeal for handball turned down from the resultant corner, Travers reacted sharply to block a shot from Mallik Wilks.

The Republic of Ireland international continued to thwart the hosts when he parried Docherty’s low drive early in the second half.

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP

Zeno Ibsen Rossi continued his comeback following injury and lined up in Kilmarnock’s 3-2 defeat by St Johnstone at the BBSP Stadium.

Rossi spent two months on the sidelines due to a hand injury and returned to action when he started Killie’s 2-0 reverse at Livingston in midweek.

He made his tenth appearance for the East Ayrshire club as first-half goals from Chris Burke and Aaron Tshibola put them 2-0 up against the Saints at the break.

However, second-half efforts from Guy Melamed, Murray Davidson and Ali McCann saw the visitors hit back to take the three points.

Following the defeat, Kilmarnock announced the departure of manager Alex Dyer by mutual consent.

LEAGUE TWO

Newport County credited Jake Scrimshaw with their goal in their 2-1 defeat by Harrogate Town at the EnviroVent Stadium.

The Exiles drew first blood in the 17th minute when Luke Gambin’s shot from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off Scrimshaw and wrong-footed Harrogate goalkeeper James Belford.

However, goals either side of half-time from Josh March and Aaron Martin saw Harrogate hit back to take the three points.

Scrimshaw was replaced by new signing Dom Telford in the 62nd minute before Newport were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Liam Shephard.

Kyle Taylor and Tyler Cordner both started as Southend United suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of managerless Port Vale at Vale Park.

Midfielder Taylor made his 16th appearance for the Shrimpers, while Cordner kept his place having made his debut in their 3-1 defeat against Bradford in midweek.

Southend were rocked when Devante Rodney netted after just 55 seconds before Cordner turned David Worrall’s shot past his own goalkeeper to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute.

The visitors found themselves 4-0 down at the break following goals from Adam Crookes and Rodney’s second.

And although they pulled one back five minutes from time through Nathan Ferguson, Manny Oyeleke struck late on to restore Vale’s four-goal lead.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Sam Sherring maintained his impressive form as Torquay United opened a ten-point lead at the summit thanks to a 2-0 victory over Barnet at The Hive.

Sherring made his 22nd appearance for the Gulls and played his part as they kept a third successive clean sheet following his return from injury earlier this month.

The 20-year-old defender, who also started 0-0 draws with Notts County and Sutton United, has helped Torquay keep seven clean sheets in his 19 league games.

Former Cherries midfielder Ben Whitfield gave Gary Johnson’s team a seventh-minute lead against the struggling Bees before Jake Andrews sealed victory eight minutes from time.

Sherring formed part of a defensive unit which coped admirably with a series of aerial attacks from the hosts.

Brennan Camp was an unused substitute in Weymouth’s 1-0 defeat by Notts County at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Camp looked on as Elisha Sam netted the only goal six minutes after half-time to end the Terras’ hopes of securing a third successive win.

Christian Saydee made his third appearance for Weymouth when he replaced two-goal hero Andrew Dallas seven minutes from the end of their 2-0 victory at Aldershot in midweek.
