Jake Scrimshaw looked on as Newport County goalkeeper Tom King posted a Guinness Book of World Records contender during their 1-1 draw with League Two rivals Cheltenham Town.

King (pictured above) is hoping to have set a new world record for the longest goal in football, currently held by Cherries goalkeeper Asmir Begovic when he played for Stoke City.

Begovic earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records when he beat former Cherries team-mate Artur Boruc against Southampton in November 2013, his goal measured at 91.9m (301ft 6in).

King opened the scoring for Newport at Whaddon Road when his goal-kick was picked up in the wind and caught out opposite number Josh Griffiths before sailing into the net.

Scrimshaw and his team-mates ran to their own penalty area to celebrate with King who was unable to prevent Matty Blair levelling in first-half stoppage time.

Having made his debut for the Exiles in their 0-0 draw with Salford City on Saturday, Scrimshaw again started and was replaced by Owen Windsor after 67 minutes.

Scrimshaw told afcb.co.uk: "When Tom scored, I just couldn't believe it to be honest. I think it shocked everyone!"

Kyle Taylor returned to action when he came off the bench in the second half of Southend United’s 2-1 defeat by Cambridge United at Roots Hall.

Taylor replaced Jason Demetriou in the 73rd minute to make his 13th appearance for the Shrimpers and his first since Boxing Day.

The midfielder, who last week extended his loan until the end of the season, had missed two games after testing positive for coronavirus and was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Grimsby.

Cambridge came from behind to move to the top of the table thanks to second-half goals from Jack Iredale and Joe Ironside.

Iredale cancelled out Simeon Akinola’s 27th-minute opener just after half-time before Ironside sealed victory in the 68th minute.

Southend dominated the first half and went close to salvaging a point when Akinola curled a 20-yard shot against the outside of the right post late on.

FA TROPHY

Sam Sherring turned in another eye-catching performance as Torquay United eased into the fifth round thanks to a 4-0 win against National League rivals Boreham Wood at Meadow Park.

Sherring, who netted the Gulls’ equaliser against the Wood at Plainmoor in November, went close to scoring his fourth goal of the season.

But with the visitors leading 1-0 courtesy of Asa Hall’s opener, Sherring saw his header bounce narrowly wide of the upright following a corner.

Late goals from Billy Waters, Adam Randell and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans saw Torquay set up a trip to Southport in the fifth round.
