Jake Scrimshaw celebrated his Scunthorpe United debut by scoring a spectacular goal in their 1-1 draw with League Two newcomers Sutton United.
Scrimshaw, who joined the Iron on the eve of the contest, drew first blood for the hosts six minutes into the second half at Sands Venue Stadium.
The 20-year-old finished with an overhead kick from inside the six-yard box after a header from Lewis Thompson had been tipped on to the crossbar by Sutton goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.
Scrimshaw was elevated to the starting line-up at the 11th hour after Harry Bunn had sustained an injury during the warm-up and was voted man of the match by Iron supporters.
His goal looked set to prove to be the winner for much of the second half until Sutton deservedly levelled through Donovan Wilson six minutes from time, leaving both teams still waiting for their first league win of the season.
In an interview with the official Scunthorpe website on Friday, Scrimshaw explained how Iron manager Neil Cox had been pivotal in his decision to join the club.
He said: “I spoke to the gaffer earlier in the week and he explained how everything works here, how the team want to play and how he wants things done. I liked the sound of everything and thought it was the move for me.
“I’m a striker who likes to play on the shoulder, get in behind and get in and around the box, scoring goals. I've had a good grounding with Bournemouth and now I want to show I'm capable in the league."
Sam Sherring marked his Football League debut by helping Accrington Stanley register a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road.
Sherring replaced Dion Charles after 72 minutes and played his part as John Coleman’s team made it three League One victories in succession.
Michael Nottingham bagged the only goal against his former club in the 17th minute before Crewe had Luke Offord sent off late on for hauling back Accy substitute Joel Mumbongo as he prepared to go clear on goal.
Sherring, who made 49 appearances during a loan spell with Torquay last season, helped the visitors keep a clean sheet as the Railwaymen pushed for an equaliser with Accy having to defend their lead for a further eight minutes of added time. The win took them to fourth place.
