Loan Watch: Sam is Gulls hero at both ends

Sam Sherring capped a memorable week by helping Torquay United maintain their National League promotion push with a 2-1 win over Weymouth on Saturday.

Sherring was the Gulls’ matchwinner as his dramatic late goal earned them a 1-0 victory over fellow high-fliers Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground on Easter Monday (pictured below).

And the versatile defender, who has also been playing in midfield for Gary Johnson’s team, made another crucial contribution against the Terras at Plainmoor.

With the hosts leading 2-1 and the clash deep into injury-time, Sherring’s last-ditch challenge on Andy Dallas prevented the striker from spoiling the day.

Dallas, who is on loan to the Terras from Cambridge United, had given the visitors the lead when he netted a penalty after being felled by Gulls goalkeeper Lucas Covolan three minutes before half-time.

Torquay duo Joe Lewis and Asa Hall were both denied by the woodwork early in the second half before a Jake Andrews wonder strike drew them level in the 59th minute.

And with five minutes remaining, Connor Lemonheigh-Evans outjumped the Weymouth defence to head home Andrews’ corner before Sherring’s late intervention preserved their lead.

Sherring, who has hit three league goals in 32 appearances for the Gulls, will be hoping for another impressive showing when they visit Sutton United on Tuesday.

Torquay are three points and one place behind Sutton who are second and trail leaders Hartlepool by one point with four games in hand.

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP

Zeno Ibsen Rossi looked on from the bench as Kilmarnock were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation rivals Ross County at Rugby Park.

County twice fought back against Killie to maintain a one-point advantage over Tommy Wright’s side.

Michael Gardyne’s goal was sandwiched by efforts from Chris Burke and Mitch Pinnock as Killie edged into a 2-1 lead inside the opening 16 minutes.

Alex Iacovitti powered home a header nine minutes into the second half to earn County a deserved share of the spoils. The draw means the hosts remained 11th, while County stayed 10th.

LEAGUE TWO

Tyler Cordner made his tenth appearance for Southend United in their 0-0 draw with Crawley Town at Roots Hall.

The match was the start of Phil Brown’s second spell in charge of the Shrimpers after he replaced Mark Molesley as manager on Friday.

Defender Cordner made a crucial clearance, heading James Tilley’s powerful effort off the line as Crawley came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

In the second half, Shrimpers midfielder Nathan Ferguson hit the post from 20 yards before Reeco Hackett-Fairchild was denied from close range by Reds goalkeeper Glenn Morris.

The point kept Southend second from bottom in the table, four points from safety with just five games remaining.

Frank Vincent was an unused substitute as Walsall triumphed 2-1 against Forest Green Rovers at Banks’s Stadium to end a 14-game winless run.

Goals from Rory Holden and James Clarke gave interim boss Brian Dutton his first win and moved the Saddlers nine points clear of the bottom two.

Jordan Moore-Taylor pulled one back for Rovers with a near-post header from a corner on 72 minutes but it could not prevent a fifth defeat in six matches for the visitors.

FRIENDLY

Goalkeeper Calum Ward kept a clean sheet on his debut for Finnish outfit HIFK in a 1-0 win over Turku Palloseura in a friendly.

HIFK’s Veikkausliiga campaign starts on 3rd May when they host FC Haka at the Bolt Arena.
