Sam Sherring played his part as Torquay United shared the points from a 0-0 draw with National League rivals Boreham Wood at Meadow Park.
Sherring’s important intervention proved crucial as the Gulls kept a first clean sheet in six games to maintain their push for a return to the Football League.
The defender was on hand to apply the faintest of touches to a shot from Corey Whitely early in the second half, diverting his effort around the post to keep the score at 0-0.
Earlier, Torquay wasted an opportunity to take the lead when Asa Hall’s 27th-minute penalty was well saved by Wood goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore.
The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock when Kabongo Tshimanga saw his shot come back off the inside of the post in the 57th minute.
While both teams had further chances to take all three points, defences stood firm with Sherring making his 25th league appearance of the season for the Gulls.
Brennan Camp played 90 minutes as Weymouth went down 2-0 against Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.
Camp made his 21st league appearance of the season for the Terras and played his part as they blunted the hosts in the first half.
But second-half goals from substitutes Theo Vassell, his third against Weymouth this season, and Jordan Ponticelli saw the Welsh outfit move into fourth place.
LEAGUE TWO
Jake Scrimshaw looked on from the bench as Newport County boosted their promotion hopes with a 3-1 win against ten-man Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.
Matt Dolan netted a penalty to open the scoring for the Exiles before Morecambe levelled through Yann Songo’o in the 20th minute.
However, the hosts had Samuel Lavelle sent off for a professional foul on Ryan Taylor seven minutes before the break.
And Josh Sheehan took advantage to restore Newport’s lead on the stroke of half-time before 42-year-old Kevin Ellison added a third against his former club.
Tyler Cordner was an unused substitute as Southend United battled out a 0-0 draw with Stevenage at Roots Hall.
Second-from-bottom Southend failed to score for a fifth game in succession while Stevenage kept their sixth clean sheet on the trot.
A share of the spoils kept Southend two points below 22nd-placed Barrow having played three more games.
Kyle Taylor’s omission from the Shrimpers squad was a “tactical decision” according to manager Mark Molesley.
