Sam Sherring enjoyed a fruitful Bank Holiday and played his part as Torquay United moved four points clear at the top of the National League after registering back-to-back victories.
Sherring started as the Gulls maintained their impressive recent home record with a 3-1 win over play-off hopefuls Eastleigh on Saturday.
Billy Waters drew first blood for the Gulls with a finely-taken sixth-minute opener before Asa Hall doubled their lead early in the second half.
And although Tyrone Barnett netted to halve the arrears in the 59th minute, Jake Andrews struck to restore the Gulls’ two-goal lead 15 minutes from time.
Sherring made his 38th league appearance and helped Gary Johnson’s team keep a 15th clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 win at Chesterfield on Bank Holiday Monday.
Goals in either half from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Waters saw the Gulls make it eight wins in nine games and condemned the play-off chasing Spireites to a fourth defeat in six.
Brennan Camp and Weymouth had a mixed bag over the Bank Holiday period, the Terras winning and losing one of their two fixtures.
Camp started and played 90 minutes as Brian Stock’s team twice came from behind to triumph 4-2 in a thriller against Woking at Kingfield Stadium on Saturday.
Andy Dallas cancelled out Charlie Cooper’s opener for the Cards before on-loan Crawley striker Sam Ashford restored the hosts’ lead.
Dallas again levelled in the 61st minute before Jake McCarthy’s stunning strike put the Terras in front late on with Sean Shields completing the scoring in the dying seconds.
Camp came off the bench as a half-time replacement for Jordan Ngalo as the Terras were beaten 2-0 by Barnet at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Monday.
Goals from Ben Richards-Everton and Tomi Adeloye sandwiched a straight red card for Anthony Wordsworth as the Bees played the final 35 minutes with ten men.
SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP
Zeno Ibsen Rossi went close to scoring a late consolation for Kilmarnock in their 2-0 defeat by Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday.
Ibsen Rossi, who bagged his first career goal in Killie’s 3-3 draw with St Mirren in the Scottish Cup at the end of April, saw his effort from a Brandon Haunstrup cross blocked deep in injury time.
The 20-year-old made his 16th appearance for Killie as defeat by mid-table Motherwell saw the East Ayrshire club slip into the relegation play-off place.
Devante Cole opened the scoring two minutes into the second half before Stephen O’Donnell sealed the points five minutes from time.
LEAGUE TWO
Tyler Cordner and Kyle Taylor both featured as Southend United triumphed 2-1 at Barrow on Saturday, a victory which ultimately proved academic in the Shrimpers’ bid to avoid the drop.
Despite claiming all three points at Holker Street, Southend’s fate was sealed after relegation rivals Colchester beat Salford and Scunthorpe drew at Bradford.
Cordner and Taylor formed a central midfield partnership against Barrow and both had goalscoring opportunities in the second half.
Southend skipper John White cancelled out Scott Quigley’s opener before Cordner saw his effort blocked two minutes after the break.
And after Terrell Egbri had netted what proved to be the winner in the 52nd minute, Taylor’s shot from the edge of the box was narrowly off target.
