Loan Watch: Sam close to equaliser

Sam Sherring went close to salvaging a share of the spoils for Accrington Stanley in their 2-1 defeat by League One high-fliers Sunderland.

Sherring, who made his fifth appearance for Stanley, fired wide with a left-foot shot two minutes from time at the Stadium of Light.

Dan Neil opened the scoring for the Black Cats in the 15th minute before Michael Nottingham headed the visitors on level terms after 30 minutes.

Carl Winchester netted what proved to be the winner on 58 minutes before John Coleman’s team pressed hard for a second equaliser.

Sherring, who made his full Football League debut in a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury on 4th September, went close but Lee Johnson’s team held on to go two points clear at the summit.

Jake Scrimshaw made his third appearance for Scunthorpe United in their 4-0 defeat by League Two rivals Exeter City at Sands Venue Stadium.

Scrimshaw, who netted on his debut for the Iron in a 1-1 draw with Sutton United last month, lined up against his former Cherries team-mate Kyle Taylor.

Grecians skipper Matt Jay scored either side of half-time before Josh Key and Timothee Dieng completed the rout as Exeter registered a first away win of the season.

Euan Pollock made his debut for Truro City in their 1-0 defeat by Southern League Premier South rivals Beaconsfield Town at Bolitho Park.

The teenage striker, who joined the White Tigers on a work experience basis on Friday, replaced Shane White in the 60th minute and went close to grabbing a late equaliser.

But after being teed up by Tyler Harvey, Pollock saw his goalbound effort deflected for a corner in the dying seconds.

Earlier, Harvey had seen an eighth-minute penalty saved by Aymen Azaze, the Beaconsfield goalkeeper sent off ten minutes from time for picking up a second yellow card.

The visitors made Truro pay for the spot-kick miss when Toby Little bagged the only goal midway through the first half.
