Loan watch: Mings wins battle of teammates

Tyrone Mings won the duel of the AFC Bournemouth teammates as Aston Villa triumphed against Championship rivals Birmingham City in the second city derby yesterday.

Mings made his seventh appearance for the Villans and played his part as they chalked up back-to-back wins and clean sheets in the 1-0 victory at St Andrew’s.

He was up against Connor Mahoney who twice went close to setting up an equaliser for the Blues having come on as a 71st-minute substitute for Jacques Maghoma.

As the hosts looked to cancel out Jack Grealish’s 67th-minute goal, Mahoney created two chances for Craig Gardner in the closing stages, both of which went begging.

Also in the Championship, Marc Pugh was replaced by Brazilian Evandro with the score at 0-0 after 54 minutes of Hull City’s 3-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Harry Arter was subbed six minutes from the end of Cardiff City’s 2-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League. The Bluebirds triumphed thanks to goals from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa.

In League One, Aaron Ramsdale kept back-to-back clean sheets as AFC Wimbledon maintained their hopes of avoiding the drop with a 2-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers.

Jermain Defoe came off the bench as a 79th-minute replacement for Scott Arfield in Rangers’ 1-1 draw against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on Friday.

Defoe was clattered by Darren McGregor who received a second yellow card for the foul late on. Earlier, Florian Kamberi’s goal had restored parity following Daniel Candeias’s opener for Rangers.

Charlie Seaman was replaced by Matty Smith 17 minutes from the end of Dundee United’s 2-1 defeat at Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership, while Keelan O’Connell was an unused substitute for Greenock Morton in their 2-0 reverse at Ross County in the Scottish Championship.

Cherries teammates Mikael Ndjoli and Jordan Holmes could line up on opposite sides when St Mirren host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership tonight.

Brad Smith had a hand in Seattle Sounders’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Colorado in Major League Soccer.

Kelvin Leerdam applied the finishing touch after a frantic goalmouth scramble had ensued following Smith’s fifth-minute cross.

Raul Ruidiaz fired a second past former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard three minutes later as Sounders continued their best start to a season since 2012.

Shaun Hobson made his debut for Eastleigh in their 3-2 win at Chesterfield in the National League.

The defender came off the bench in the closing stages as the Spitfires twice came from behind to maintain their play-off challenge.

Hobson’s Cherries teammate Tyler Cordner started Havant & Waterlooville’s 2-0 defeat at Maidstone United, a reverse which left the Hawks in the National League drop zone.

Frank Vincent came off the bench to replace Jamie Reid in the 89th minute of Torquay United’s 2-0 win at Billericay Town in National League South, while Corey Jordan started for Eastbourne Borough in their 1-1 draw with Chelmsford City at Priory Lane.

Sam Sherring played his part in Weymouth’s 3-0 win over Hendon, a victory which saw the Terras return to the top of Southern Premier League South.

And Jake Scrimshaw, James Boote and Tom Parker-Trott all started for Poole Town in their 5-1 defeat at Chesham United in Southern Premier League South.
