AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Sam Sherring featured in an FA Cup classic as Torquay United went down 6-5 against Crawley Town in the tie of the first round at Plainmoor.

Defender Sherring made his ninth appearance for the Gulls having last week extended his loan spell until January.

Torquay were pegged back from 2-0 at half-time and 5-3 in extra-time as a Tom Nichols hat-trick helped fire the League Two visitors into the second round.

Goals from Aaron Nemane and former Cherries midfielder Ben Whitfield had the Gulls in the driving seat at the break, their reward for an excellent first-half showing.

Crawley goalkeeper Tom McGill, who is on loan from Brighton, was stretchered off and taken to hospital after suffering concussion in a challenge with Connor Lemonheigh-Evans.

And after Nichols had reduced the arrears from the penalty spot, Ben Watters equalised in the 14th minute of stoppage time, added due to McGill’s injury.

Josh Umerah restored Torquay’s lead four minutes later before Jordan Tunnicliffe sent the tie into extra-time in the 21st minute of added time.

Two penalties from Asa Hall appeared to have won it for the Gulls, only for Nichols to score twice to restore parity at 5-5.

Ashley Nadesan put the finishing touches to a pulsating encounter when he popped up with the winner two minutes from time.

Sherring has made seven appearances in the National League for the Gulls, helping them to six wins as they have climbed to the summit.

His loan was extended along with Adam Randell’s from Plymouth Argyle with both players having made a big impression.

Torquay manager Gary Johnson told the club website: “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to secure the services of Adam and Sam until mid-January.

“Both have been a major part of our success during the start of the season – both young lads with big futures.

“The important thing is that they throw themselves into Torquay United wholeheartedly and they’ve both done that to the nth degree.

“We keep in touch with their clubs regarding how they are doing. It’s been great for all three parties. Great for us because we get two excellent players and great for them because they’re getting competitive games at a time when they need them.

“And it is also good for the clubs they’re coming from because they know their players are getting regular games that are competitive.

“We’ll see what happens in January, but they’ve become very much a part of what we’re doing.

“We thank AFC Bournemouth and Plymouth Argyle for allowing us this opportunity. Hopefully, it will be a beautiful relationship over time.”

Jake Scrimshaw (pictured above) twice went close to scoring after coming off the bench in Walsall’s 2-1 defeat by Bristol Rovers at the Banks’s Stadium.

Scrimshaw replaced Elijah Adebayo in the 63rd minute and with the Saddlers trailing to first-half goals from Jack Baldwin and Brandon Hanlan.

The striker saw his right-foot shot saved by Rovers goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola and had another goalbound effort blocked by a defender.

Although Caolan Lavery halved the arrears with a header three minutes from time, it proved a mere consolation as the League One visitors progressed to the second round.

Tyler Cordner saw red for two yellow cards as League Two strugglers Scunthorpe United were beaten 3-2 by National League high-fliers Solihull Moors.

The Iron have been severely affected by Covid-19 and their previous three matches were all postponed.

Stephen Gleeson’s fourth-minute penalty gave Moors the lead at Glanford Park but Scunthorpe soon levelled through John McAtee.

Defender Cordner received his first booking three minutes into the second half before Krystian Pearce headed Moors back in front.

A second penalty from Gleeson with ten minutes remaining looked to have settled the tie before Kevin van Veen’s goal set up a grandstand finish.

Moors survived with Cordner receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Jamie Ward in the second minute of stoppage time.

Cordner’s Cherries team-mate Frank Vincent, who has made eight appearances for Scunthorpe this season, missed the clash due to injury.

Meanwhile, a hamstring injury forced Kyle Taylor to sit out as Southend United exited after suffering penalty shootout heartache against Boreham Wood, the tie having finished 3-3 after extra-time.

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP

Zeno Ibsen Rossi was an unused substitute as Kilmarnock suffered a third successive 1-0 defeat, this time at the hands of St Johnstone.

Rossi, who has made five appearances for Killie, looked on from the bench as Dan McNamara’s second-half goal sealed the points for Saints at McDiarmid Park.
