Loan Watch: Fifty up for Brennan

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Brennan Camp made his 50th appearance for Weymouth in their 2-0 defeat by National League high-fliers Sutton United at Gander Green Lane.

Camp, who helped the Terras win promotion from National South last season, showed his versatility by filling in at centre-back for the injured Ben Morgan.

And although the 20-year-old turned in a typically-combative display, he was unable to prevent the visitors from slipping to defeat.

Craig Eastmond headed Sutton into a 14th minute lead before Camp’s brave block denied Donovan Wilson a second.

However, Wilson added a finely-taken second goal six minutes after the restart when he turned sharply in the penalty area to fire past Terras goalkeeper Ethan Ross.

Sam Sherring helped Torquay United keep another clean sheet but their 0-0 draw with Bromley saw them lose ground in the title race following Sutton’s win over Weymouth.

Torquay’s lead at the summit was trimmed to two points and they were left to rue a failure to convert a host of presentable chances at Plainmoor.

Scott Boden hit the crossbar as early as the third minute before Bromley goalkeeper Mark Cousins twice denied Jake Andrews and also thwarted Asa Hall.

Sherring, who made his 39th league appearance for the Gulls, went close to breaking the deadlock with a diving header which flashed narrowly past the post.

In the closing stages, Cousins again came to play-off chasing Bromley’s rescue when he made another fine save from Sunderland loan striker Benjamin Kimpioka.

LEAGUE TWO

Tyler Cordner and Kyle Taylor both started as Southend United brought down the curtain on their 101-year stay in the Football League with a 1-1 draw against Newport County at Roots Hall.

Although Southend’s relegation had been confirmed the previous weekend, the Shrimpers gave the Exiles a scare in their pursuit of a play-off place.

Former Cherries defender Shaun Hobson put the hosts ahead in the 11th minute, the 22-year-old netting following a short corner between Harry Kyprianou and Terrell Egbri.

Greg Halford squandered a gilt-edged chance to double their lead when he fired over from point-bank range before Mickey Demetriou headed Newport level on 56 minutes.

Southend saw another great chance to take all three points go begging when Exiles goalkeeper Tom King saved Matt Rush’s penalty to ensure the Welsh club would qualify for the play-offs.

Midfielder Taylor made 31 appearances and scored one goal during his stay in Essex, while utility man Cordner played 14 games for the Shrimpers and also netted once.
