Emerson Hyndman scored a crucial goal to help Atlanta United book their place in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference play-offs.

He netted in the last minute as Atlanta registered a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Justin Meram drew first blood for the hosts in the fourth minute before Brad Guzan was credited with an own goal to make it 1-1.

San Jose were reduced to ten men when Cristian Espinoza received a second yellow card in the 34th minute and the visitors looked destined to hold on.

But Hyndman finished emphatically after being teed up by Darlington Nagbe before Gonzalo Martínez added a third in stoppage-time. Chris Wondolowski saw red for San Jose late on.

The win saw Frank de Boer’s Atlanta keep pace for top spot alongside New York City and Philadelphia Union.

Brad Smith went close to opening the scoring in Seattle Sounders’ 2-0 defeat by Western Conference rivals DC United at Audi Field.

Smith embarked on an electrifying run which saw him race past a host of DC players, only to see his resultant shot come crashing back off the crossbar.

DC, inspired by Wayne Rooney, made Sounders pay with goals either side of half-time from Lucas Rodriguez and Frederic Brillant earning them the points.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Sam Surridge (pictured below) went close to providing the assist for Andre Ayew to make the breakthrough in Swansea City’s 0-0 draw with fellow Championship high-fliers Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Striker Surridge, who replaced Borja in the 72nd minute, set up Ayew just 60 seconds after coming on but his team-mate’s shot as well saved by City goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

The Swans, who remained second on goal difference, had defender Jake Bidwell sent off in stoppage-time for a foul on Niclas Eliasson.

Harry Arter replaced Ivan Cavaleiro in the 66th minute of Fulham’s 1-1 draw against Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Tom Cairney drew first blood for the Cottagers in the 42nd minute before an injury-time header from substitute Atdhe Nuhiu rescued a point for the Owls.

Mikael Ndjoli was an unused substitute in Gillingham’s 1-0 defeat by Ipswich at Priestfield, with Kane Vincent-Young’s first goal for the club taking them to the top of League One.

Nnamdi Ofoborh saw red in the 54th minute of Wycombe’s ill-tempered 1-0 victory over League One rivals Portsmouth at Adams Park.

Ofoborh was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Tom Naylor, the challenge sparking a fracas on the touchline which saw Pompey’s Ellis Harrison dismissed for picking up a second booking.

Earlier, Ofoborh had replaced Matt Bloomfield to make his third appearance for the Chairboys who triumphed thanks to Adebayo Akinfenwa’s late penalty.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth defended Ofoborh when he told the Press Association: “The tackle was not malicious or dangerous but, nowadays, it is tough for the referees as they have to make a decision.”

Forest Green Rovers manager Mark Cooper felt Kyle Taylor had been harshly treated during their 0-0 draw with League Two strugglers Stevenage.

Taylor, booked for a foul on Charlie Carter in the 48th minute, received a second yellow and a red for a foul on Michael Timlin four minutes from time.

Cooper told the club website: “If that was a sending off then it should have been six-a-side at the end.”

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP

Jermain Defoe came off the bench to bag a late double in Rangers’ 4-0 win against struggling St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Alfredo Morelos, whom Defoe replaced 11 minutes from time, put the visitors ahead a minute after half-time before Connor Goldson headed in on the hour.

Defoe added a controversial third on the counter-attack after St Johnstone claimed an attempt had crossed the line before he slid in his eighth goal of the season late on to seal the win.

AZERBAIJAN PREMIER LEAGUE

Asmir Begovic was beaten late on as leaders Qarabag registered a 3-1 win over fourth-placed Zira. Julio Cesar Rodriguez hit Zira's consolation two minutes from time.

Begovic lined up in Qarabag’s Europa League opener against Sevilla in midweek, the La Liga outfit triumphing 3-0.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Frank Vincent almost provided the assist for Matt Buse to break the deadlock in Torquay’s 0-0 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge at Plainmoor.

Vincent, who played the full 90 minutes, teed up Buse in the 26th minute only for his team-mate to fire wide when well placed.

Tyler Cordner got another 90-minute run-out under his belt as Ebbsfleet went down 3-0 against in-form Barrow at Stonebridge Road.

Barrow went ahead through John Rooney before Scott Quigley’s double earned them a third straight league win.

Charlie Seaman came on to replace Jack McKnight 65 minutes into Eastleigh’s 3-1 defeat against AFC Fylde at Mill Farm.

Although ex-Cherries star Danny Hollands cancelled out Dan Bradley’s opener for the Coasters, goals from Jordan Williams and Ryan Croasdale saw them end a seven-match winless run in the league.

FA CUP SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND

Jake Cope (pictured above with Ollie Dennett) was the hero as Poole Town booked their place in the third qualifying round thanks to a 2-1 victory over National South strugglers Hungerford Town at the Black Gold Stadium.

Cope, making only his second start for the Dolphins, netted a stunning winner when he curled a shot past Hungerford goalkeeper Adam Siviter from just outside the 18-yard box.

Harry Baker had given Poole the lead in the 26th minute before Liam Ferdinand levelled for Hungerford in the 69th minute.

Poole will visit Isthmian South Central outfit Tooting & Mitcham in the third qualifying round on 5th October.

Calum Ward and Shaun Hobson both played their part as National South high-fliers Weymouth kept a clean sheet in their 3-0 win at Sholing.

Andy Robinson, Ben Thomson and Brett Williams were on target as the Terras eased past their Southern League Division One South hosts at Portsmouth Road.

Weymouth will host either Isthmian Premier outfit Worthing or National South rivals St Albans in the third qualifying round on 5th October. They replay tomorrow following a 2-2 draw at St Albans on Saturday.

Tom Hanfrey replaced Andrew Sealey-Harris in the 64th minute of Farnborough’s 5-0 defeat by National South leaders Wealdstone at Cherrywood Road. Hanfrey came on with Boro trailing 4-0.

Jack Torniainen, who signed on the eve of the contest, was an unused substitute in Dorchester Town’s 1-0 defeat by Southern Premier South rivals Blackfield & Langley at Gang Warily.
