Tyler Cordner and Kyle Taylor both featured as Southend United gave their League Two survival bid a boost thanks to 1-0 victory against Harrogate Town.
Cordner (pictured above) and Taylor came off the bench at the EnviroVent Stadium to help Mark Molesley’s team register a first win in eight games.
Defender Cordner replaced the injured John White at half-time while midfielder Taylor came on for Alan McCormack in the 77th minute.
Cordner went close to breaking the deadlock when his header from a Tom Clifford cross was saved by Harrogate goalkeeper James Belshaw just four minutes after the break.
The crucial winning goal was scored by Ashley Nathaniel-George who netted the loose ball from ten yards after McCormack’s effort had been cleared off the line by Connor Hall in the 69th minute.
His second goal of the season was also the Shrimpers’ second in eight games, Nathaniel-George’s penalty earning them a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe on March 20th.
Taylor made his 25th appearance for Southend and Cordner his seventh as victory saw them close the gap to three points on Barrow and four on Colchester, both of whom they play in their final four games.
Cordner and Taylor were both unused substitutes in Southend’s 0-0 draw with Walsall on Tuesday with Cherries team-mate Frank Vincent replacing Cameron Norman for the Saddlers in the 74th minute at Roots Hall.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brennan Camp went close to scoring for the second Saturday in succession during Weymouth’s 1-0 defeat against promotion-chasing Chesterfield.
Camp, who bagged his first senior goal in the Terras’ 4-0 win over Wealdstone, headed narrowly wide after meeting a Sean Shields free-kick three minutes from time at the Proact Stadium.
Weymouth old boy Tom Whelan volleyed home the only goal in the 38th minute as victory hoisted the in-form Spireites into the play-off zone.
Camp, who started the contest in his familiar right-back position, finished his 24th league appearance for the Terras at centre-back following a tactical switch by boss Brian Stock at the break.
The change almost paid dividends nine minutes after the restart when Weymouth claimed substitute Pierre Fonkeu’s header had crossed the line, only for referee Aaron Jackson to wave for play to continue.
Sam Sherring made his 29th league appearance for Torquay United as they suffered an ill-deserved 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dagenham & Redbridge.
Angelo Balanta netted the only goal ten minutes from time, although the Daggers had goalkeeper Elliot Justham to thank for keeping them in the contest.
Justham denied Connor Lemonheigh-Evans after he had gone through one-on-one and also pulled off a stunning save to keep out Josh Umerah’s strike.
