Loan Watch: Brennan bags first senior goal

Weymouth boss Brian Stock heaped praise on Brennan Camp after the defender had bagged his first senior goal in their 4-0 win over National League rivals Wealdstone.

Camp doubled the Terras’ lead when he netted with a finely-executed volley in the 59th minute, his effort adding to Josh McQuoid’s first-half opener at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

It was Camp’s first goal as a professional, the former Cherries youth team captain having scored against Azerbaijan on his debut for Scotland under-18s in a friendly in February 2019.

Stock, who saw Sean Shields’s late double earn him his biggest win in management, told the Dorset Echo: “I’m pleased for Brennan because he’s a great lad.

“I think that’s the first goal he’s scored for the club and it was an important goal, it put us 2-0 up with a really good foothold in the game.”

Stock also praised Camp for the part he played in the Terras defence keeping a seventh clean sheet in the National League this season: “I thought the back four were excellent.

“Their decision making was spot on, they tracked runners, held a high line, condensed the pitch and the distance between the units was excellent. Because of that, we managed to pick up a lot of second balls.”

Camp’s 23rd league appearance of the season for the Terras was eventful as Wealdstone striker Ross Lafayette escaped punishment for swinging an arm at him in the 18th minute while defender Jack Cawley flattened him in the second half.

Sam Sherring played his part as Torquay United got their promotion push back on track with a 1-0 win over King’s Lynn Town at Plainmoor.

Sherring, who made his 27th league appearance for the Gulls, went close to scoring before and after Scott Boden had netted the only goal a minute into the second half.

The defender headed narrowly wide after Adam Randell had nodded a Jake Andrews centre back across the face of the goalmouth in the eighth minute.

And Sherring was inches from doubling the hosts’ lead, his effort from a tempting Andrews free-kick flashing past the post soon after Boden had struck to earn them a first win in four matches.

LEAGUE TWO

Kyle Taylor went close to scoring after having an unexpected run-out during Southend United’s 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

Taylor was drafted on to the substitutes’ bench at the 11th hour after Elvis Bwomono had been injured during the warm-up.

The midfielder (pictured above) replaced Alan McCormack in the 61st minute and saw his left-foot shot from 20 yards just clear the crossbar four minutes after he had come on.

Fellow substitute Ashley Nathaniel-George appeared to have won the day for the Shrimpers when he scored from the penalty spot 11 minutes from time.

The spot-kick was awarded following an off-the-ball incident which saw Iron skipper Jordan Clarke given his marching orders for a clash with Timothee Dieng.

However, the ten-men staged a late recovery and Alfie Beestin drove into the box and fired home from 12 yards to rescue a point for the hosts in the last minute.

Tyler Cordner was an unused substitute for Southend as a share of the spoils left Mark Molesley’s team seven points adrift of safety.

Jake Scrimshaw made his 13th appearance for Newport County as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient at Cardiff City Stadium.

Scrimshaw set up a chance for Nicky Maynard in the 16th minute but his effort was saved by Orient goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

A double substitution after 56 minutes saw Scrimshaw replaced by Ryan Taylor and Wales international Joe Ledley come on for Matthew Dolan.

Just five minutes after the switch had been made, Conor Wilkinson netted the only goal when he turned in a cross from Daniel Kemp.

Scrimshaw was handed a start against Orient after coming off the bench to score his fifth goal of the season and his third for Newport in their 2-1 defeat at Port Vale in midweek.

SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP

Zeno Ibsen Rossi looked on from the bench as Kilmarnock climbed off the foot of the table following a 4-1 win over Motherwell at Rugby Park.

Much-travelled striker Kyle Lafferty drew first blood for Killie inside the opening 60 seconds before Barry Maguire levelled for the visitors in the eighth minute.

However, second-half goals from Rory McKenzie, Chris Burke and Mitch Pinnock earned Tommy Wright his first win as Killie boss.
