Kelly's U21s lose Euros opener

Lloyd Kelly was a starter but England under-21s began their European Championship campaign with a 1-0 loss to Switzerland.

With all of the Young Lions' games hosted in Slovenia, defender Kelly come as close as anyone to opening the scoring in a goalless first half, heading just wide from a set piece.

The match continued to fail to click into top gear after the break, though Switzerland grabbed a winner in the 77th minute when Dan Ndoye's deflected shot looped over former Cherries 'keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Kelly had a half chance to equalise late on, but was unable to hit the target as Aidy Boothroyd's side made a slow start to their three-game group campaign - which will be completed over the current international break.

England next take on Portugal in Ljubljana on Sunday evening, before their final group game against Croatia next Wednesday. The teams that qualify from the group will return for the knockout stages in the summer.

In the Dominican Republic Nathan Moriah-Welsh was an unused substitute for Guyana as they lost 3-0 to Trinidad & Tobago in their opening World Cup qualifier.

Levi Garcia, Sheldon Bateau and Ryan Telfer netted for the Soca Warriors in San Cristobal - Moriah-Welsh will get his next chance at a first senior cap when Guyana face Bahamas in their next qualifier on Tuesday.

In southern Africa there was good news for Jordan Zemura's Zimbabwe, even though the twice-capped Cherries player was unable to link up with the squad.

Perfect Chikwende's goal in the 1-0 win over neighbours Botswana means that the side will compete in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, which starts in January 2022.
