AFC Bournemouth’s new signing Ryan Christie came off the bench to earn his 21st senior cap for Scotland in their 2-0 defeat by Denmark on Wednesday.

Midfielder Christie, who joined the Cherries from Celtic on deadline day, replaced Southampton’s Che Adams 19 minutes from time in Copenhagen.

Scotland’s World Cup hopes were dealt a serious blow as a vibrant Denmark scored twice in the space of 93 seconds early in the first half.

Goals from Daniel Wass and Joakim Maehle left Steve Clarke’s team facing a mountain to climb after just 15 minutes.

The result left Scotland seven points behind Group F leaders Denmark – with top spot guaranteeing a place in Qatar next winter and second place reaching the play-offs.

Scotland have slipped two points behind both Israel and Austria in the race for the runners-up spot, with those two teams meeting in Haifa on Saturday.

Christie will be hoping for more game time when Scotland host Moldova at Hampden on Saturday and visit Austria on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland looked on from the bench as Norway drew 1-1 with Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland fired home his eighth international goal to give Norway the lead in the 20th minute.

But Netherlands, in the first game of Louis van Gaal’s third spell in charge, levelled through Ajax’s Davy Klaassen nine minutes before half-time.

Cherries defender Chris Mepham was an unused substitute as a depleted Wales were held to a 0-0 draw by Finland in a friendly in Helsinki.

Ex-Cherries loan star Harry Wilson had a first-half penalty saved by Finland goalkeeper Carljohan Eriksson.

Mepham will be looking to add to his 21-cap tally when Wales face Belarus in Minsk on Sunday and host Estonia in Cardiff on Tuesday, both World Cup qualifiers.
