Brooks hits Wales winner

David Brooks grabbed the headlines for Wales, as they defeated the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League yesterday evening.

Chris Mepham also featured at the Cardiff City Stadium, playing 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet as the hosts remained top of Group B4.

It was Stephen Kenny’s side who edged a tight first-half, with chances few and far between for either team.

However, Brooks made his mark in the 66th minute, getting his head on the end of a Gareth Bale cross to open the scoring.

The Cherries midfielder nearly had a second, but was denied only by a superb Darren Randolph save moments later.

The win sees Wales extend their unbeaten run to ten in competitive fixtures, with a draw against Finland on Wednesday evening enough to secure them promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.

As for Ireland and Mark Travers, who was on the bench in south Wales, they remain third and a point ahead of bottom side Bulgaria, the two teams facing off in Dublin on Wednesday to decide who is relegated to the third tier.
