Jefferson Lerma played his part as Colombia defeated Venezuela in their final World Cup qualification game, but the win wasn’t enough to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

The midfielder started the game as Colombia knew they needed to better Peru’s result to claim the all-important inter-continental play-off spot.

Lerma played 77 minutes as James Rodriguez scored the only goal in the game to secure the win, stepping up from the spot after Rafael Santos Borré had been fouled.

However, Peru comfortably dispatched Paraguay in their final game to confirm the only play-off spot, bringing to an end Colombia’s World Cup hopes.

Philip Billing received his second international cap as Denmark defeated Serbia in an emotional friendly.

The Cherries midfielder replaced Christian Eriksen in the 80th minute, his first appearance for his country since October 2020.

Eriksen had found the net on his first return to Parken Stadium, the venue where he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

Other goals came from Joakim Maehle and Jesper Lindstrom as Denmark cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Chris Mepham started for Wales as they draw with Czech Republic in a friendly at Cardiff City Stadium.

The defender picked up his 28th cap for his country as Wales and played the whole 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw.

Rubin Colwill scored his first international goal to cancel out Tomas Soucek’s opener in Wayne Hennessey’s 100th appearance for Wales.

Ryan Christie was a late substitute as Scotland drew with Austria in a friendly in Vienna.

Scotland had been due to play their World Cup play-off fixture with Ukraine during this window but arranged two friendly matches upon its postponement.

As Austria suffered defeat to Wales in their play-off semi-final last week, Scotland travelled to Vienna for yesterday’s fixture.

Goals by Jack Hendry and John McGinn put the Scots ahead before late strikes by Michael Gregoritsch and Alessandro Schopf earned Austria a draw, Christie appearing as a 77th minute substitute.

Meanwhile, Nathan Moriah-Welsh played 90 minutes as Guyana earned a draw with Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly.

Former Crystal Palace and Birmingham City star Neil Danns scored the only goal for Guyana before a 92nd minute equaliser from Levi Garcia ensured it finished level.

Moriah-Welsh had previously come on as a half-time substitute in the 5-0 win over Barbados on Monday.

Gavin Kilkenny impressed as Republic of Ireland under-21s boosted their hopes of qualifying for next year’s European Under-21 Championship with a win over Sweden.

The midfielder played the whole game and was heavily involved in the opening goal, his good run down the right flank and cross into the box allowed Motherwell’s Ross Tierney to strike.

Sweden looked dangerous throughout, but Ireland wrapped up the win through Tyreik Wright, meaning they’re just one point behind second-placed Sweden with a game in hand.

James Hill featured for England under-20s as they claimed a convincing win over Germany on Tuesday evening.

The 19-year-old played the whole game in-front of nearly 8,500 fans at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium.

Manchester City’s James McAtee netted alongside Leeds United’s Sam Greenwood and Blackburn Rovers’ Tyrhys Dolan as Hill impressed in the back-line.
