AFC Bournemouth’s David Brooks has scooped the prestigious Football Association of Wales player-of-the-year award.

Brooks, who has starred for the Cherries in his first season in the Premier League, was also named FAW young player of the year.

The talented frontman also became the first player in history to win both awards in the same season.

The awards were voted for by members of The Red Wall, the official FAW supporters’ club, and the ceremony took place last night at Hensol Castle in the Vale Resort.

Hosted by Gabby Logan, the event celebrated Welsh international football and Brooks was recognised for his successful transition from the under-21s into the senior ranks over the past 12 months.

He said: "When you look at both the awards, there’s so much talent up for nomination so it’s a massive achievement for myself and, thankfully, they voted for me.

"Whenever you win an individual award, especially from the fans, it lets you know that you're doing a good job and to keep working hard."

Capped three times by Wales under-21s, Brooks has won nine senior caps since making his debut as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat by France in Paris.

He started their Nations League wins against Republic of Ireland in 2018 and is in Ryan Giggs’s squad for their Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia in Cardiff on Sunday.

A summer signing from Sheffield United, Brooks has won three Michael Matthews player-of-the-month awards at Vitality Stadium.

The 21-year-old made an explosive start to his Cherries career, scoring in wins over Crystal Palace, Watford and Fulham in October.

He netted both goals in a 2-0 victory over Brighton in December and was also on target in the memorable 4-0 triumph against Chelsea in January.

A key player in the club’s best start to a season in the top flight, Brooks has netted six times in 25 games in the Premier League.

FAW player of the year: Jess Fishlock and David Brooks. Young player of the year: Elise Hughes and David Brooks. Players’ player of the year: Sophie Ingle and Gareth Bale. Special award: John Toshack. Media choice award: Ben Davies.
