AFC Bournemouth Women kickstarted their pre-season campaign with an 8-1 win over Torquay United Ladies.

Goals from Jade Hockey, Hannah Bennett, Emma Davis, Katelyn Wort, Erin Thickett, Rebecca Miles and Meg Vella sealed the victory, with a consolation goal coming for Torquay.

The Cherries started strongly and were on the scoresheet inside the opening ten minutes, as Hockey bagged her first of the afternoon.

The forward latched onto Wort’s flick-on from a corner and found the back of the net to give her side the lead.

It was then over to Bennett to double the lead for Steve Cuss’ side. The midfielder slalomed through the middle of the park, before slotting neatly home into the right-hand corner.

The third was equally as impressive, this time Davis getting her name on the scoresheet after a fine strike from outside the area flew past the Torquay goalkeeper.

However, with the side rampant, 16-year-old Wort, playing in her first senior game, made quite the impression by adding a fourth.

The youngster drove the ball out of defence and continued her run forward, before bending the ball perfectly into the top left corner.

At half-time, Cuss opted to rotate the side, giving all players at least a 45-minute run out.

While the personnel may have changed, the level of performance was matched in the second half.

The Cherries soon bagged a fifth after Thickett made the most of a loose ball at the back, while another came shortly after thanks to Miles’ efforts at the back post.

Hockey then netted her second of the afternoon, tapping home a delightful ball into the box to increase her side’s goal tally to seven.

Finally, last year’s Women’s Player of the Season Meg Vella rounded off the action to top off a fine display to kick-start an exciting pre-season programme.

Following the game, manager Cuss spoke to afcb.co.uk about the performance.

“It was a good performance,” he began.

“I wanted to use all the players we had available and it was really nice to have four 16 year-olds in the senior squad.

“I thought we dominated the ball, moved it round well and we created a number of chances, so it was good all round.

“There’s still lots to work on and it’s early days. That was the opening game and they’ll come thick and fast, so we’ll try and get the minutes built up now.”
