AFC Bournemouth Women yesterday won the Southern Region Women’s Football League with a rampant 12-1 win over Winchester City Flyers Reserves.

The Cherries, who have lost just once in the league all season, will now progress to the Southern Region Women’s Premier League after an impressive campaign.

Emma Davis stole the show in yesterday’s season finale, netting five goals, whilst Meg Vella also impressed with her four strikes.

Goals from Rosie Eden, Emily Phillips and Chloe Spencer capped off an excellent performance and all-round league campaign for Steve Davies’ side.

And it was Eden who first opened the scoring on 21 minutes after a spell of heavy Cherries pressure paid off, the 25-year-old with a composed finish placed beyond the ‘keeper.

Less than ten minutes later and the Cherries had doubled their lead, this time through Emma Davis, who netted her first of the afternoon.

Following the break, and Davies’ side had continued where they left off.

Vella got the opening goal of the half 48 minutes in, beating three players inside the box to finish, before her second came just five minutes later to make the score 4-0.

The hosts, however, did pull one back shortly afterwards, with their striker hitting an unstoppable shot into the left-hand corner to reduce the deficit.

Yet, the Cherries were too strong and Davis soon netted her second, third and fourth goals within a five minute spell, the latter of which came from a lovely through ball from Beth Perdrisat before the midfielder rounded the ‘keeper to finish.

Vella also wasn’t finished and netted another on 74 minutes, with Emily Phillips also striker no more than a minute later.

As the score stood at 8-1, Chloe Spencer got in on the act for her first goal of the season, Vella unselfishly playing her in to slot home with ten minutes to go.

And there was still time for the Cherries to find another couple of goals, Vella and Davis coming up with the goods in the final five minutes.

Following the win and confirmation of the league title, a thrilled Davies spoke to afcb.co.uk.

“This was everything that we’ve been working towards,” he began.

“I’m so proud of the whole squad, we’ve played exceptionally well and they’ve been a pleasure to work with.

“We’ve still got a League Cup final and a friendly against Chelsea to play, so it’s a great way to end the season.”
