AFC Bournemouth under-18s coach James Lowy was delighted with the start made in the side’s Professional Development League campaign last weekend.
It’s the first time that the squad played in the league, and the first game since the academy was elevated to category two, but Lowy's boys more than proved they belonged with a stunning 5-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.
Jonny Day netted a hat-trick with Ash Clarke and Remy Rees-Dottin adding to the scoresheet in a comprehensive win.
Speaking to afcb.co.uk, Lowy praised the work his team have done over the summer: “The attitude and application of the players throughout pre-season has been really good and it has given them a great platform to build on from for the season.
“It’s a pleasing first league performance against Wigan, especially coming off the back of some challenging fixtures previously.
“We had challenged the group about being better in both boxes and this was noticeable in the weekend’s performance.
“It is now a challenge for us as a group to improve and develop each day.”
