AFC Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run to four games following a 0-0 draw at home to Brentford on Saturday.

The Cherries felt they should have had a penalty in the first half and Ivan Toney went close for the visitors in the second, but neither side did enough to claim all three points from an attritional encounter at Vitality Stadium.

Gary O’Neil made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with Newcastle United before the international break, with Kieffer Moore restored to the starting line-up in place of Ryan Christie who dropped to the bench.

The visitors started brightly and tested Neto after three minutes, as Mikkel Damsgaard pounced on a loose ball from Chris Mepham and curled a shot goalwards from 20 yards, but the Brazilian stopper reacted well to dive and beat the ball away.

Neto was called into action again on 11 minutes, as a clearance from a Brentford corner fell to Mathias Jensen who controlled well but could only hit direct shot straight at the Cherries 'keeper.

The hosts began to settle and saw an appeal for a penalty turned down following a VAR review on 21 minutes. Marcus Tavernier picked up the ball on the right flank, drove at goal and slipped in the advancing Jordan Zemura who went down under a challenge from Kristoffer Ajer just inside the box.

Referee Thomas Bramall gave a goal kick but was ordered to watch the incident again following a review by VAR official John Brooks. After a lengthy delay, Bramall eventually stuck with his original decision, much to the dismay of the Cherries players who felt the sliding Ajer had upended Zemura before making contact with the ball.

Both sides struggled to regain any momentum following the incident and it took until the 38th minute for either to fashion another opportunity.

That came as Marcos Senesi found space on the left to deliver a dangerous cross which Dominic Solanke did well to meet, but he could only head over the bar from 10 yards out.

The Bees created an opening moments later as Shandon Baptiste threaded the ball through to Ivan Toney, but he scuffed a left-footed shot across goal which Neto was able to scramble and gather.

Thomas Frank’s side went close again after 43 minutes as Damsgaard lifted the ball to the back post and Ajer rose highest but he headed over the bar when he might have done better.

Tavernier nearly capped an entertaining end to the half with his first Cherries goal, but his eight-yard shot from Solanke’s low cross was well blocked by Ben Mee.

The Cherries were nearly in front within five minutes of the restart as Kieffer Moore headed a deep corner back across goal and Jefferson Lerma nodded goalwards, but Ivan Toney reacted well to back track and head off the line.

Though there was no shortage of endeavour from both teams, neither were able to wrestle the initiative as the second period advanced into its latter stages.

It was the Bees who nearly did just that in the 74th minute, as substitute Josh Dasilva flicked a long ball into the path of Toney who connected well with a half volley which flashed just wide of Neto’s near post.

From there the home side took the initiative and looked the most likely to snatch a winner in the closing stages.

With the pressure continuing to the final minute of four added on, Bournemouth had another big call for a spot kick denied by the referee.

A Cherries ball into the box flicked off the turf and onto the arm of a Bees defender, but Thomas Bramall's whistle signalled the end of the game rather than the chance for a winner.
