Jordan Zemura, AFC Bournemouth supporters’ player of the month for August, made a blistering start to September by scoring his first senior goals.
The 21-year-old opened his account when he netted at the second attempt after his first effort had been blocked by Barnsley defender Toby Sibbick.
His eighth-minute goal was added to by Dominic Solanke, the striker’s fifth of the season coming following a mistake by Barnsley goalkeeper Brad Collins at the start of the second half.
Collins spilled a routine cross from Phil Billing, with Solanke pouncing on the loose ball, an early gift for the frontman who turns 24 on Tuesday.
Zemura capped a memorable individual display when he doubled his goal tally with a finely-taken third for the Cherries seven minutes from time.
Gary Cahill made his first appearance for the Cherries as head coach Scott Parker made four changes following the 0-0 draw at Hull City before the international break.
It was the first time Cahill had featured in the Championship since he lined up for Sheffield United – in a 1-0 win against Barnsley – during a loan spell from Aston Villa in December 2007.
The 35-year-old defender, an unused substitute at Hull, was joined in the starting line-up by Mark Travers, Adam Smith and Billing, the trio all having recovered from illness.
Cahill made his 625th appearance for club and country, while fellow recent recruits Jamal Lowe and Ryan Christie were both named among the Cherries substitutes.
Parker’s team saw plenty of the ball in the opening stages and Tykes goalkeeper Collins raced off his line to beat Jaidon Anthony to Lloyd Kelly’s through ball early on.
Zemura drew first blood for the Cherries in the eighth minute, the defender rewarded for showing great endeavour by registering his maiden career goal.
David Brooks traded passes with Solanke to open up the Tykes defence before threading the ball to Anthony who slipped it into the path of Zemura.
And although his initial effort was blocked by defender Sibbick, Zemura reacted quickest and fired the loose ball past Collins from a tight angle.
Brooks was then denied following a neat one-two with Jefferson Lerma, the Wales international seeing his effort charged down by Michal Helik.
Solanke just failed to make contact with Zemura’s low cross before Brooks slashed his shot wide after being picked out by Anthony.
Phil Billing was booked for a foul on Ben Williams, the Barnsley defender unable to continue after having treatment with Claudio Gomes replacing him on 28 minutes.
Cahill showed his class with a perfectly-timed tackle on Clarke Oduor as the Barnsley man threatened to mount an attack.
Referee James Linington briefly took centre stage when he penalised Kelly for a debatable foul on Dominik Frieser, the official taking an age to blow his whistle.
Linington then erroneously showed a yellow card to Cahill before realising his mistake, cancelling the former Crystal Palace man’s booking and cautioning Kelly.
Lerma’s strike on the stroke of half-time was ruled out for offside before goalkeeper Collins came to the Tykes’ rescue in added time.
Brooks found Anthony with a delightful crossfield pass and the young winger then picked out Solanke whose first-time effort was turned behind by Collins.
Collins went from hero to villain, the Barnsley goalkeeper culpable as the Cherries doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half.
Despite taking three attempts to grab Billing’s cross, Collins, who was under no pressure, allowed it to squirm through his grasp with Solanke on hand to drill the ball into the back of the net via the post.
As the Cherries went in search of a quick third, Lerma side-footed a presentable opportunity into the grateful hands of Collins from 25 yards.
A flurry of activity on the Barnsley goal saw Anthony denied by Collins and Ben Pearson’s piledriver headed away for a corner by Helik.
Billing sliced wide having been teed up by Anthony before Solanke just failed to get on the end of a driven, low cross from Smith.
Deadline-day signing Christie came on for his Cherries debut, the Scotland international replacing Brooks after 70 minutes.
Collins atoned for a poor clearance by turning Smith’s cross-shot over the bar before Morgan Rogers came on for his home debut, replacing the impressive Anthony ten minutes from time.
Christie's low drive was parried by Collins before Zemura capped a memorable day by adding his second and the Cherries' third in the 83rd minute.
The defender displayed all the hallmarks of a proven striker, finishing with aplomb after he had won the ball just inside the Barnsley half of the pitch.
