Callum Wilson stepped off the bench to score a last-gasp winner and see off Blackburn Rovers 3-2 in an enthralling Carabao Cup tie.

Junior Stanislas announced his return with a superbly taken opener for the hosts, the single-goal advantage remaining to the break thanks chiefly to some good goalkeeping from the visiting David Raya.

Jordon Ibe won a penalty and then took it himself, doubling the lead for the Cherries ahead of the hour mark, though Rovers were soon back in the tie when Craig Conway drove home from just outside the area.

Breaking sharply Blackburn won and scored a penalty, Adam Armstrong levelling the tie. 

Derrick Williams received a late red for a deliberate handball, the game seemingly destined for penalties before Wilson's late intervention to send Bournemouth into round four.

There were nine changes to the team that started at Turf Moor at the weekend, Jefferson Lerma and Adam Smith, the latter switching flanks to left-back, retaining their spots in a strong Cherries line-up.

Rovers had the ball in the net inside 30 seconds, striker Ben Brereton wheeling away before seeing the offside flag raised. Moments later Lys Mousset had three bites at the cherry in the opposing box, the Frenchman eventually crowded out by descending defenders.

Artur Boruc was sharp to parry a cross that was heading in, Brereton unable to react in time three yards out as it fell his way, while Raya needed to tip over as a Simon Francis cross almost deflected in; Tyrone Mings heading into the 'keeper's arms from the resulting corner.

The lively start continued and 14 minutes in Stanislas capped his first competitive start of the season with a fine strike.

Ibe read Francis' overlap and the skipper's first time ball in sat up nicely for the returning winger, who connected sweetly 16 yards out at hip-height and found the side of the net with power. 

The Stanislas show continued with a free-kick that needed saving before a 22 yarder skidded narrowly wide after a slight deflection.

Raya made a terrific stop to thwart a Jermain Defoe downward header, the same striker soon seeing the Rovers 'keeper make another fantastic save to repel his close-range shot.

The lead remaining one goal as the second period got under way, Blackburn soon showed they weren't to be discounted when Armstong rolled a shot wide.

Ibe took on his man to give his side the ideal chance for a second, the winger grabbing the ball and taking responsibility from the spot, confidently sending the 'keeper the wrong way as he rolled into the bottom corner. 

However, a moment of sloppiness five minutes later, Lerma losing the ball in midfield, allowed Conway to stride towards the area and dispatch a well-hit effort past Boruc to return the lead to a single strike, the first goal the Cherries have conceded in the Carabao Cup this season.

On 70 minutes Tyrone Mings fouled Brereton in the box and Rovers had the chance to level with a penalty of their own, Armstrong doing so, via the inside of the post, from 12 yards.

The rapidly swinging pendulum of a match very much alive approaching the final ten minutes, substitute Marc Pugh had a shot blocked as the home side threw everything towards securing a match-winner inside 90 minutes.

The goal didn't come despite the pressure, though Derrick William was given a straight red for a deliberate handball to prevent Wilson a goalscoring opportunity in added time, Wilson then hitting the crossbar with a header.

Not to be denied, the striker scored from a corner moments later, in the right place to divert home with another header to finally win the match for Bournemouth. 

Grasping opportunities

With Eddie Howe ringing the changes a number pf player had the chance to impress, no-one putting their case forward more firmly than Stanislas.

After an hour seven days ago in the Hampshire Senior Cup, 22 Premier League minutes at Burnley and 69 against Rovers, the 28-year-old has shown no ill-effects of his knee injury, displaying the sharpness and technique that has made him a firm Cherries favourite. The big question now will be how ready the winger is with Crystal Palace in mind.

Warming to the League Cup

Tuesday's competition is not one the Cherries have had much success in down the years, two quarter-finals berths in the last half decade the high water mark to date.

Two wins in the Carabao Cup so far this season bring Bournemouth within one win of that same stage, the fourth round draw set to take place at 9pm on Saturday evening, broadcast on Quest.
