FULL TIME

A defeat but above all, a really good run out for the lads against a top class side.

The first I'd seen of Betis, but they looked incisive, clever and very creative. A good workout for us and I'm sure tomorrow will be the same.

Thanks for following the updates and if you're outside the UK watching the stream, thanks for supporting afcbTV!

20:47

90 + 2: GOAL for Betis.

Curse of the commentator. Completely ignore my last post...

Joaquin the veteran, plays a superb pass over the top of our defence and Loren Moron, a sub, pokes into the bottom corner precisely under pressure.

It's 2-0 here.

20:46

90: Two minutes of added time...

I want to keep you glued to these updates, but it doesn't look like anything is going to happen in these final two minutes.

Betis are stroking it around and we're looking to harry and close down...

20:41

86: Save!

A flying one from Boruc!

Sub Andres Guardardo, probably famous for playing at World Cups with Mexico, unleashes a left-footed drive which Boruc flies through the air to punch away.

Good effort, good stop.

20:39

83: We're making a second sub...

It's Mousset who makes way.

He's now on the touchline talking to Eddie - could he potentially have a knock? Or telli ng him he's OK maybe, we can't tell from here!

Youngster Alex Dobre comes on to replace him - the Romanian travelled with the first team squad to La Manga this summer.

20:34

Into the final ten minutes we go...

20:34

78: First sub...

Defoe makes his way off for Emerson Hyndman.

So it looks like Hyndman and Ibe will both play off Mousset, Ibe slightly more on the right, Hyndman slightly more on the left side.

20:32

76: Save...

A comfortable one, but we're making inroads.

Defoe picks up the ball and drives into the area, he's well marshalled by two defenders but somehow manages to squeeze in but he manages to find a drive at the near post but it's saved comfortably by Robles.

20:24

We're on the front foot at the moment...

20:23

66: Chance!

Lovely stuff from Defoe!

He gets the ball on the edge of the box, turns his defender with ease and drives into the area.

He's slightly wide, and has to take it on his left foot and aim for the bottom corner... The striker does that, but it flashes narrowly wide of the far stick.

Unlucky!

20:15

59: Good defending!

Mings and Rico start us off...

The latter fizzes a ball into Defoe who holds it up superbly and feeds Pugh down the right.

He plays a clever cut back to Mousset and the crowd hold their breath... But in the nick of time the defender gets across to boot it into the stands - JUST!

20:10

In the thick of the action...

20:10

53: Delivery from Pughie!

It's a good one from the right!

It looks perfect for Defoe to tap in, but Bartra slides in to read the game superbly to stop the frontman from getting a certain goal!

We've started the second-half well here... (hopefully not a jinx!)

20:06

50: First shot of the second half...

It's from Diego Rico!

He bursts down the left-hand side and has a bit of time to look up.

He senses an opportunity 25-yards out and blasts one, it swerves a tad but it's comfortable for Robles.

Encouraging though!

20:00

46: Back underway...

We're unchanged to begin the second period.

If you're watching the video on the stream outside the UK, how good has Andrew Surman been on the co-commentary!

19:46

HALF TIME

We're a goal down at the interval - but Betis do look like a very good side.

We've had chances of our own, none more so than Ibe's back post effort which was saved, but we're behind thanks to Boudebouz's effort.

19:45

43: A glaring miss...

And it's only pre-season!

Junior Firpo heads one at the back post which Boruc makes a good save to keep out.

The rebound falls quickly to Sanabria in the six-yard box and he side foots it wide with the goal gaping.

Should be 2-0.

19:37

37: Good play!

Almost the equaliser!

We causes problems initially from Francis' right wing cross, before Mousset takes an excellent touch and smashes a powerful effort which Robles has to save, before hitting another strike which has to be headed out in the nick of time!

Good from us - Mousset lively!

19:34

33: HUGE CHANCE!!

A lovely move from us!

Jermain Defoe gets the ball at a slight angle and unleashes a drive which is excellently struck.

Joel Robles - the old Everton 'keeper - gets down low to parry it away, it's a good save and the rebound falls to Ibe at the back post.

It looks a certain goal but Robles gets back to make the save again!

Should be 1-1!

19:29

26: Good block from Mings!

Antonio Sanabria gets into the area after a sweeping counter attack.

He scored nine goals for club and country last season, in space he wallops one but Mings read the danger and made a superb sliding block.

Brilliant defending.

19:25

Trying to find a way through...

19:22

22: Challenge!

A good opening for us!

Francis and Arter play it well, Arter fizzes a ball into Ibe on the edge.

Ibe turns, takes a touch and gets a yard on the edge of the box to unleash a drive.

He smashes one, it looks threatening from up here, but Aissa Mandi throws himself at the ball to make a brilliant block. Better from us!

19:20

A hard shift so far...

19:18

18: GOAL for Betis.

Boudebouz, who threatened earlier, opens the scoring.

A great pass by Marc Bartra releases Boudebouz in behind, it's a teasing ball which forces Boruc to come out otherwise he'd be in.

It gets caught in the turf and Boruc missed it, allowing Boudebouz to take a touch past Tyrone Mings and tap into an empty net.

A goal down here.

19:13

13: Decent chance...

For Betis.

Barragan finds Boudebouz in the area and he cuts it onto his left foot. He shapes it nicely but despite being in a good area, he curls it well over the bar.

Should hit the target - but a good opening for the visitors against us.

19:05

05: First five...

Well, admittedly not watching much La Liga, I have to say I'm impressed by Betis so far.

They look an extremely classy outfit playing attractive football through the heart of the pitch.

They're on top and keeping the ball well, at the moment we're just keeping it steady at the back.

19:01

01: We're underway...

Betis kick us off and already they're already sticking to their possession game early on.

Pass, pass, pass - this will be a good test for the lads!

Number 9!

18:26

Welcome to Vitality Stadium!

Diego Rico has been pitchside chatting to some of his Spanish compatriots in the Betis ranks as he plays against familiar opposition tonight.

This isn't his first game for us though, as he started the 3-1 win over Amiens at the training ground in midweek.

A good chance to impress in front of the crowd tonight!

18:23

Betis' team...

A few recognisable faces.

Former Boro player Antonio Barragan is the captain, while Joel Robles formely of Everton starts in goal.

Former Spain winger Joaquin is on the bench while William Carvalho, recently signed from Sporting, are both on the bench.

Team: Robles, Bartra, Canales, Camarasa, Sanabria, Boudebouz, Barragan, Tosca, Brasanac, Mandi, Firpo.

18:06

TEAM NEWS!

It's Rico time!

Diego Rico plays his first game at Vitality Stadium.

Here's the team in full...

Boruc; Francis, Simpson, Mings, Rico; Ibe, Arter, L Cook, Pugh; Mousset, Defoe.

17:53

Who should we look out for tonight?

Real Betis do have some solid names in their line up, former Spain winger Joaquin is one of the most recognisable ones - but Marc Bartra not only is a name that people will twig, but has been solid for Betis since he joined in January.

The former Barcelona and Dortmund centre back helped shore up their defence massively in the second half of last season.

But he's more than a solid defender, he is confident in carrying the ball out of defence and looking to pierce the opposition with pinpoint passes.

17:49

What can we expect from Betis tonight?

Once more, Simon Harrison - La Liga expert - has given us the lowdown on tonight's opponents...

"Quique Setien has completely revitalised Real Betis since joining the club once his Las Palmas contract expired in the summer of 2017. After a long absence, Betis are back in Europe and are one of the more exciting teams in La Liga.

"A tactical revolution saw the club trust Setien and go with three central defenders and a style of play that relies on retaining possession.

"The sale of Fabian Ruiz to Napoli this transfer window is a major blow for Betis, but they have plenty of experience and quality to see them through."
