Dane scores early in the second half as AFC Bournemouth lose narrowly to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

The Cherries held out well in the first half but were quickly undone at the start of the second when Christian Eriksen neatly placed a shot home.

Substitute Jermain Defoe's strike was one of a handful of good opportunities created by the Cherries, but Eriksen's goal alone was to settle Bournemouth's first visit to the new Wembley.

Steve Cook and Dan Gosling came in for Marc Pugh and Defoe in the Cherries' two changes from last time out against Leicester City.

There was a calm start to proceedings at Wembley with the Cherries holding their own in the opening exchanges, though Steve Cook needed to be aware to stop Eriksen from latching on to a through ball after 13 minutes.

Dele Alli imaginatively attempted to back-flick home an Eriksen shot, while with the Cherries' first shot Junior Stanislas' saw his effort was deflected narrowly wide, the away side claiming the change of direction came via Davinson Sanchez's arm.

The visitors soon came closer still as only a fantastic Hugo Lloris save down low kept out a corner sent inadvertently goalwards by the hip of Eric Dier six yards out.

The possession stats were being dominated by Spurs past the half-hour mark and Asmir Begovic needed to block well after Harry Kane had beaten the offside line, Toby Alderweireld then heading the resulting corner a yard over.

Approaching the interval Bournemouth were keeping Tottenham at arm's length, the home fans quietened by the visiting resistance.

Within two minutes of the restart Tottenham had the opening goal they had rarely threatened to score in the opening 45 minutes.

Kane and Heung-Min Son combined for Eriksen to break into the area, and after Simon Francis' tackle rebounded kindly, the Dane coolly slotted home.

The goal raised the volume, home tails and the tempo, with balls starting zip more crisply along the Wembley turf from Spurs boots.

At the other end Joshua King swerved a shot from the angle over the bar, before a Kane header hit the back of the net for the hosts - before soon being ruled out correctly for offside.

Kane was soon frustrated again as Begovic twice saved well from the England man from close range, the Cherries 'keeper standing up strongly in quick succession to make two impressive blocks.

Stanislas nicked into the box after Gosling's backheel, but with the angle tightening and defender Sanchez closing down, the Cherries number 19 couldn't get his shot away. 

Defoe received a hero's welcome from the home fans as the former Spurs frontman and Jordon Ibe came on with 15 minutes remaining, Eddie Howe sharpening his side's attacking options. 

The oncoming pair combined instantly, Ibe threading through for Defoe to swivel and shoot low, Lloris saving with his boot at the near post.

A fine passing move from the hosts ended with Dier having a shot bravely blocked in the area before Alli stooped to head a Moussa Sissoko centre but saw his effort bounce wide.

The 3,000 travelling Bournemouth fans roared the team forwards to the last, but their side was unable to create the one golden chance they needed to draw level.
