A late surge saw the Cherries come back from a two-goal disadvantage and claim a point in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

Dwight Gayle gave the away side the lead against the run of play early on and the Newcastle striker had a second right on half-time after the Cherries were unable to clear a corner.

Adam Smith reduced the arrears with ten minutes remaining in the second half, the substitute finishing smartly in the area, and there was more to come late on for the Cherries.

Gosling smashed home in the 89th minute as Bournemouth piled on the pressure, the home side claiming an invaluable Vitality Stadium point. 

In Cherries team news, Jordon Ibe missed out on the squad, replaced by Joshua King in the only change to the starting 11 from the last match at Huddersfield, while Jermain Defoe made a return from his ankle injury to take a place on the bench.

In sunny but chilly conditions, the Cherries made a positive start and former Newcastle man Gosling may have felt he could have done better when heading over from ten yards following Junior Stanislas' cross.

Stanislas caused danger again within two minutes, a low centre this time only just eluding Callum Wilson's back-post charge.

For a third time Stanislas was almost the architect when his freekick from the right allowed Wilson to turn and strike, his bobbling shot palmed away by United 'keeper Martin Dubravka at his near post.

Kenedy couldn't get the dip on his own attacking freekick with the away side's first sight of goal before, in the 17th minute, Newcastle took an unexpected lead.

Matt Ritchie was heavily involved, the one-time Cherries midfielder set into space down the right. His low cross squirmed past Asmir Begovic and Steve Cook, allowing Gayle to put the ball over the line from a yard out.

A Gosling drive into the box won the Cherries a corner and as the set piece was headed away Stanislas ran on to volley the ball off target.

Ten minutes to go in the first half and Bournemouth were beginning to impress their attacking play on the contest, though with Newcastle happy to sit deep and counter the hosts were struggling to break meaningfully into the final third. Gosling did, however, soon slash a volley from the edge of the box a yard over.

Charlie Daniels joined an attack down his left flank but fired over, but on the stroke of half time United, again against the run of play, had their second.

A corner was half-cleared by Nathan Ake but as the ball came back in Ayoze Perez was able to drill in dangerously, the ball flicking off Begovic and into the path of Gayle who once more finished from next to no distance. 

Ahead of the restart, Smith came on in place of Charlie Daniels, Eddie Howe stationing his substitute in a left-back role.

Ryan Fraser appeared to be wiped out by Jamaal Lascelles in the area as the Bournemouth attacking intent grew, referee Roger East waving away home protests.

Ritchie was soon protesting himself after receiving a caution following a foul on Ake, while Joshua King's left-wing charge preceded a pass into the area which Wilson stepped over and Fraser fired over the angle.

The home pressure building, King was nearly in on goal only to be beaten to the ball by a defender, before Smith dragged a low shot five yards wide.

Lys Mousset was brought on for Fraser with just over 25 minutes left, while Ritchie bombed in a bouncing effort from range which Begovic held well, a rare away attacking foray following the interval.

Gayle thumped a freekick against the wall for the visitors, the ricochet falling into the path of Perez, the Spaniard only able to stab over from six yards.

Defoe replaced Wilson, the striker immediately into the action as he swivelled and sent a shot, via a deflection, into the side netting. Steve Cook then sent a header goalwards, with Dubravka lunging back to clear off his goal line.

Jonjo Shelvey missed a sitter as the away side had the chance to put the result beyond doubt, squared to and in space thanks to Christian Atsu's ball, and moments later Bournemouth were instead able to halve the deficit. 

King played a ball into Lewis Cook in the area and the midfielder's backheel was perfect for Smith to swerve in off the bar for his first of the season.

Ten minutes left and the pressure was a Bournemouth. Mo Diame's mistimed tackle on Mousset allowed Stanislas the chance to shoot with a freekick, though Dubravka gathered. 

The equaliser did come not long later, however, Gosling crashing home Ake's perfect centre home from close range.

The home bombardment continued into five minutes of added-on time, a series of late corners causing pressure that couldn't quite become a winner for the heavily-pressing hosts.
