    Five Point Preview: Middlesbrough

    /media/9979/arter.jpg

AFC Bournemouth host Garry Monk's Middlesbrough side in this evening's fourth round tie at Vitality Stadium.

Here are five points to look out for ahead of the clash...

    Last time around...

AFC Bournemouth fans will have fond memories of the last encounter with Middlesbrough, which also took place at Vitality Stadium.

An early goal from Joshua King ensured that the Cherries took an early lead, before Benik Afobe also got in on the act 16 minutes in.

Gaston Ramirez’s red card with just 20 minutes on the clock meant that Boro had an even larger mountain to climb, which was later made worse by Marc Pugh’s second half wondergoal.

However, the Cherries weren’t done there, as Charlie Daniels hit a fine ball from the edge of the box to make it 4-0.

    Recent form on the road...

Middlesbrough’s away form has been fairly inconsistent in the Championship, having won one, drawn three and lost twice

Nevertheless, a 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers last month gave Garry Monk’s side a huge confidence boost, whilst impressive draws have also been recorded at the likes of Fulham and Aston Villa.

    Route to round four...

Middlesbrough have sailed into round four of the Carabao Cup, with two wins inside 90 minutes.

Round Two, where the northern outfit entered the competition, saw them sail past Scunthorpe United with a convincing 3-0 win thanks to goals from Ashley Fletcher, Lewis Baker and Fabio.

The third round saw Boro come up against fellow Championship side Aston Villa. A 2-0 win, which was aided by Tommy Elphick’s red card, saw them cruise into the last 16.

    Who to look out for...

Patrick Bamford will certainly be one to keep an eye on, having scored both goals in Middlesbrough’s round three clash at Villa Park.

Additionally, Lewis Wing is another one of Boro’s young talents, having just signed from Shildon in the Northern League. The central midfielder, who is enjoying his first season as a professional, has featured in both Carabao Cup games so far, earning the man of the match accolade for his performance against Villa.

    Full house at Vitality...

AFC Bournemouth have sold all tickets for the Carabao Cup tie with Middlesbrough ahead of the game.

The Cherries will once again be backed by a full house in round four, as they were for the encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion earlier on in the competition.

Supporters without tickets to the game are reminded not to travel to the stadium on the evening of the tie as access won’t be granted.

Media view: What to expect from Middlesbrough

AFC Bournemouth face Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, but how do they fare going into the game and who’s been instrumental in their cup run so far?

afcb.co.uk spoke with Boro Gazette’s Jonathon Taylor to get the lowdon on Garry Monk’s side.

afcb.co.uk: It’s still early days, but how have Middlesbrough been looking so far this season?

JT: It was a summer of upheaval really, with a new manager, new coaching staff and a new philosophy implemented. After the disappointment of last season, ten new signings came in and no-one thought they’d win any of their first few games! Middlesbrough will probably be looking at their tally so far this season and be feeling that they’re a few points off where they should be. They’re an exciting attacking side and could outscore most teams in the league. However, they’ve made uncharacteristic errors at the back, which you wouldn’t have seen in their last Championship campaign under Aitor Karanka.

afcb.co.uk: Tell us a little bit about Middlesbrough’s cup run...

JT: Garry Monk made nine changes for the Scunthrope game and ten for the last round against Aston Villa. They have one of the biggest squads in the division so he has to rotate. Monk has been using the cup to allow for some fringe players to stake their claim in his team. Patrick Bamford scored two against Villa and then started the next game in the league so the message is very much there and if you play well, you’ll be given a chance.

afcb.co.uk: Do you think that Garry Monk will continue to rotate his squad for Tuesday’s game?

JT: It’ll be interesting to see what he does against Bournemouth because the final doesn’t seem too far away. I think he’ll have to rotate and make changes again because they’ve got tough game at Reading on the Saturday after.
I’d certainly expect Monk to make changes and, with the size of his squad, he has to keep everyone on their toes.

afcb.co.uk: Who is the one player Bournemouth fans should look out for ahead of the tie?

JT: I’d go for Bamford. He hasn’t started many games in the league of late but did open his account at Villa. He’s definitely one person you expect to be given a chance on Tuesday. For some reason, it’s not really worked out for him so far this season, but he’ll identify the Bournemouth game as one where he can go and get some minutes and add another couple of goals to his tally.

Carabao Cup thoughts from the manager

    /media/10490/170922_eddie_howe_pressconference_007.jpg

On his side's Carabao Cup run...

We want to get as far as we can. the quarter-finals await the winners on Tuesday and the games take on a different meaning then. The most important game is the next one.

I don't see it as a distraction, it's a game we want to win.

    On opponents Middlesbrough...

They're going okay, we know how difficult the Championship can be in terms of physicality, and we've had tight games against Middlesbrough in recent seasons.

We know a lot of their players from previous battles and I'm sure both sets of players will be well prepared for the game.

    On team selection for Tuesday...

We always prepare the team to win and I believe in the squad. I need to keep the squad harmony good and give opportunities to some players and the chance to develop to other players.

There's a whole host of reasons I might change the team but I believe in all of our players.

    On Saturday's Stoke win...

It was a really big game for us and a massive win, the manner of the win as well was pleasing, in the first half we played some really good football at a tough ground in some tough conditions.

In the second half we faced a lot of balls into the box, a tough challenge, but we managed to see the game out.

    On facing the pressure...

We've faced the pressure countless times, we've been questioned defensively and rightly so and from leading position we've lost points.

The squad's ability to remain strong with a Premier League team throwing all they can at you was good to see.
