Extra time needed as Bournemouth secure Carabao Cup progress with a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Junior Stanislas hit the woodwork at the start of the second half, but no goals followed until King's cleverly stabbed finish in the 98th minute.
The goal was enough to deservedly send the Cherries through to the fourth round, the draw set to take place on Wednesday evening.
There were wholesale changes to both sides, nine for the Cherries with just Simon Francis and Ryan Fraser – stationed at right-back for the evening – remaining from the 2-1 Premier League win on Friday night.
Brighton’s club record signing Jose Izquierdo tested the strength of Artiur Boruc’s wrists early on, the Polish ‘keeper punching away the winger’s curling effort.
Lys Mousset replied for the hosts with a low shot from 22 yards, but debutant Tim Krul was behind it all the way.
Some hustle and bustle from Benik Afobe won the ball back for the Cherries down the left flank, but after charging his way into the area his pull back was blazed over the bar by strike partner Mousset.
The hosts were holding possession against the deep-sitting Seagulls, with no way through in the first 20 minutes despite Jordon Ibe’s rising strike from just outside the area.
Ibe soon struck again from similar range, this time Krul dropping to his right to gather.
A low shot was skimmed in by Jiri Skalak for the hosts, Boruc saving but unable to hold, though recovering rapidly to foil Jamie Murphy’s close-range follow up.
Afobe had a penalty appeal waved away, while at the other end Izquierdo had home hearts in mouths as he turned in the area and drove a whisker wide of the far post with a low shot.
Fraser’s shot was held at head height by Krul, while Ibe’s ball through to Afobe caused defensive panic with a desperate challenge diverting the ball narrowly wide.
On the stroke of half time the elusive opener came the closest yet as Ibe stepped inside and fired in low, Krul at full stretch to fingertip the ball behind.
The second half began with a Bournemouth bang, Mousset’s shot blocked, Afobe’s header down well saved and Stanislas unable to convert from two yards, the returning midfielder hitting the post.
The Seagulls came almost as close in the 51st minute, Steve Cook’s miscued backpass sending Jamie Murphy through on goal, the Scot looking certain to score but for Boruc’s magnificent outstretched leg which diverted the ball round the post.
Ibe's forceful run was then centred for Stanislas, the Londoner again unable to convert as he skied a half-volley from 12 yards.
Krul was again alert on the hour as he dived to his right to keep out Lewis Cook's shot, from the corner Mousset's header was cleared off the line by the Brighton defender stationed on the post.
Fraser struck two yards over the bar from range before Joshua King entered the fray in place of Mousset as the game continued its search for an opening goal.
Into the final ten minutes Afobe had a rare opening in the box, getting his shot away but seeing it saved by Krul.
A low strike from Fraser saved brought the 90 minutes to a goal-less end, heralding 30 further minutes of extra time.
To start extra time Lewis Cook's goalbound effort deflected just over the crossbar, substitute Marc Pugh also shooting off target.
King's energy saw the Norwegian dribble into the box, where he centred for Afobe but the volleyed finish skimmed wide.
Legs visibly tiring, Bournemouth's goalward push intensified - and the deadlock was finally broken by the hosts on 98 minutes.
An intricate move saw Pugh and King exchange passes, the striker steadied himself and poked home across Krul from eight yards, the Cherries grasping the lead.
After the change of ends substitute Adam Smith drove wide inside the box, the chance one of few in the final 15 minutes as the Cherries safely secured their passage to round four of the Carabao Cup.
