The development squad’s pre-season preparations continued with a narrow 2-1 loss away to Weymouth.

Defeat to the National League South outfit followed victory over Poole Town in the side’s pre-season opener on Tuesday night.

Having bagged a brace in that outing, Kian Tydeman continued his fine friendlies form by slotting in the Cherries' consolation late in the second half.

The damage had been done to the team’s hopes of back-to-back wins in the opening 45-minute period, trailing by two goals at the break.

Manager Alan Connell told afcb.co.uk after the game: “Physically, it was another good day for us, but technically, we weren’t at the level I would want us at.

“If we’d have got that bit right in the middle and final third, I think we would have created more chances than the ones we did.

“That gives me mixed feelings; it was another good workout but we’re going to have to improve.”

Weymouth took the lead on 31 minutes as Toure Williams was dispossessed deep in Cherries territory before Dan Roberts raced forward and hammered past Billy Terrell.

Inside a minute and that advantage had been doubled, Tom Bearwish the man flicking home Leo Hamblin’s cross at the near post.

“We gave away a goal which I thought was probably a free-kick that we didn’t get,” Connell commented. “Then a minute later we conceded again, which is something we often talk about with not letting one become two.

“That was disappointing, but the response was good before half-time, we managed to create a couple of decent openings.

“With it being a pre-season game, we made a lot of substitutions and that made us a lot younger with trialists and under-18s.

“Credit to them though, they gave it a right go.”

That effort from the young Cherries side was rewarded around five minutes from full-time as Tydeman was slipped in on goal, he then rounded the Terras ‘keeper and coolly slotted home.

A late triple save from substitute Cameron Plain ensured the Weymouth lead remained at a single goal, but the away team was found wanting for a chance to level the scores.

With the development squad next in action away to Charlton Athletic under-21s on Wednesday, Connell spoke on the team’s pre-season preparations.

He said: “We’ve tried to plan pre-season and gone with a couple of non-league teams first, and now we’re going to go into playing more academy teams.

“It’s a varied programme but whatever level you play at, when you get to the age these boys are now, there’s a huge physical demand.

“So, the fact that we’ve had a good test against a physical Weymouth will only serve us well leading into the busy and exciting games programme that we’ve got coming up.”
