JASON TINDALL ON CHARLTON TRIP

Posted on: Fri 06 Aug 2010

Jason Tindall goes back to where it all started for him tomorrow as Bournemouth make the trip to Charlton. The Cherries assistant manager has nothing but good memories about the London club and is looking forward to the trip to the Valley where he left in 1998 after captaining the reserve side to the Combination League title.

Jason has many good memories of Charlton and believes they should be playing at a higher level and told www.afcb.co.uk, "It's going to be great to go back. All my memories of my time at Charlton are good ones. I had a great time there, I was there for a number of years and it was a fantastic club and I'm sure it still is now. The infrastructure they have is great, the stadium is a lot bigger now from when I was there, but the training facilities are still the same and they were magnificent. It is a great club and in a way similar on a bigger scale to what we have here as it is very much a family club.

It's going to be good to go back there and it's something I never thought would happen as soon as it has done because they were in the Premier League not so long ago. I've got nothing but good memories of Charlton and it's a shame to see them in League 1. They are a big club and should be playng in a higher league.

There is a big financial difference between being in the Premier League and the Football League. Charlton established themselves in the top flight and Alan Curbishly did a terrific job there and they were a very successful and stable club for a number of years. When they got relegated, it is always difficult and in my opinion, if you don't get back in the first two years, it becomes very difficult and you have to make wholesale changes. You have to adjust because you only get the parachute payments for a certain amount of time and you can only carry on paying the Premier League wages for a certain amount of time before it starts to cripple a club.

So they have had to make big changes this year and it is disappointing from their point of view because they were very unfortunate last season not to get promoted. They are going through a new phase with a lot of players leaving and a number coming in, so they are almost starting again. That's the way football goes and it's happened to a number of clubs, and hopefully that they do once again reach the heights that they have one day because it's a great club and they deserve to be there.

Looking at ourselves, we are delighted with the way that pre season has gone. You can't take anything from the results, but we believe that the performances have been good and what we have been looking for. We are going to Charlton confident with how we have done and with confidence in the squad we have got. We believe that we will be more than a match for anybody in the league. We are coming up a division, so we are riding the crest of a wave and have a great bunch of lads here and over the last 18 months, we have a team of winners. That is exactly what we will be going to Charlton to try and do. If we can get a positive result, we can use that as a springboard. This time last season we went to Bury and got a fantastic result and that stood us in good stead for the rest of the season and we will be looking to do the same again.

I'm not intending to be playing this season even though I played at Dorchester last week! That was a last minute thing! We were hoping that Harry Arter would be fit enough to play because he had been off for a few days with illness, but at the last minute, we felt it was the right decision to pull him out and I had to step in his shoes. I enjoyed it and it was a good run out and it's good to do that now and then, but nothing something I will be doing on a regular basis! We have a strong squad now with more numbers, so hopefully I won't be needed again"
