MK DONS 0 - 1 AFC BOURNEMOUTH

Posted on: Wed 08 Oct 2008

The Cherries travelled to Milton Keynes on Tuesday evening looking to extend their run in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Bournemouth impressed in the last round dumping out League One Bristol Rovers, 3-0 at home for Joe Roach's only game in charge before new boss Jimmy Quinn took over.

Quinn made only one change to the side that travelled to Wycombe at the weekend, Blair Sturrock came in to replace Sammy Igoe. Sturrock was making his first start for the Cherries since his loan signing from Swindon Town. Hosts MK Dons made seven changes from the side that beat Millwall 4-0 on Saturday.

The first half proved to be a close affair with neither side taking a hold of the game.

MK Dons created two good chances early on as Jemal Johnson and Florian Sturm had chances on goal but were denied by Jalal and Pearce respectively.

Darren Anderton again showed his class as he marshalled the midfield but Bournemouth were forced to change their side after just 14 minutes. Jeff Goulding made way for Brett Pitman, who would partner Sturrock in attack.

Both sides struggled to produce clean cut chances within the first half and the sides went into the break even, 0-0.

A minute into the second half the home side were down to ten men. Flavien Belson was shown a straight red by referee Anthony Taylor for a challenge on Brett Pitman.

It was Pitman who soon came close for the Cherries but his angled shot was gathered by 'keeper Abbey.

But it wasn't until the 77th minute the deadlock was broken. Former England international Darren Anderton found the first goal as Danny Hollands fired a left footed shot from 25 yards deflecting off Anderton, wrong footing goalkeeper Abbey and hitting the back of the net.

As Bournemouth looked to be in pole position to knock out the current holders at home, a loud penalty shout was turned down by the referee as the home support felt Jason Pearce had handled in the area, but the referee and assistant waved play on.

Jimmy Quinn's men held on for another impressive victory in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy to progress to the next round after this 1-0 win.
